Fitting a new diesel filter

My tank breather is only a couple of inches above the top of the tank. Nowadays you can buy a filler that has a side branch for attachment to the breather pipe. This would overcome your problem as any leakage would go straight back into the tank.

But how would it breathe? Surely you would collapse your fuel tank if the cap were airtight?

As usual, having posted something about a product it has disappeared from the Internet, never to be found again! I replaced my deck filler a few years ago because some Med filling stations only had nozzles far too big for my existing one. When searching for a suitable replacement I recall seeing several with combined breathers. I assume there was some means of venting the cap to allow air in. Now I can't find any of them.

thanks againeveryone, I like the ides Vyv but as you imply, where are they now?

What keeps puzzling me is... why is it happening?
It can occur when the tank is half full and not being filled and just on the mooring ????

It has to be that diesel accumulates in a dip in the hose. When the air in the tank expands due to temperature effects the fuel is expelled from the breather. If you can route the hose so that it rises continuously I think you will eliminate it. If this is not possible you could make a small reservoir in the breather line but it will require occasional draining.

Thanks Chris i got all my bits n bobs from hyphose 2day and fitted the lot.

I found a great deal of sludge in the bottom of the tank, so with the two drains open i attached a pipe to one and blew down the end of the hose, pushing some clean diesel and anti bug stuff through it. Possibly a bit of my moisure from breath went with it but at least its clean diesel coming from bottom of the tank now.

I fitted new pipes all round in the tough, diesel ok rubber stuff, I got the Vetus filter/trap for a lot less in the end..... (that's what friends are for)..... and it is exactly the same as the one I had so the bolt holes etc match up.

I refilled the tank.... humping 20 litres of diesel at a time 120 yards then up a laddder and then filling via a filtered funnel, 4 times..... where are all the yard experts when you need a hand?? Mind you it is a Monday.
I discovered that I need 10 lites of diesel in the tank before the diesel runs out the supply tap to the filter/trap so thats a good thing it must help it to stay above the sludge.
I cant get the tank right out to thoroughly clean it without cutting a bulhead out, so i hope that's cured things for now.

Vyv, the little bit of diesel trapped in the breather pipe responding to expansion makes complete sense and I have to reroute the pipe and get it to a higher position. Thanks.
Getting to the connection, undoing it, rerouting etc is going to be a nightmare but a vital job as the smell of diesel on a hot summers day is repulsive.

After I had cleared up and patted myself on the back I then found a small weep of diesel from my fuel guage pipe. This is a clear pipe up the side of the tank which lets me see the level of diesel in the tank.......b****r!
And I thought the only weep of diesel on that side of the tank was from the drain tap.

Well, I'm definatly not emptying the 80 litres to fix that 2moro!!

I havn't had time to bleed the system through and fire her up yet as I have to run a hosepipe to the strainer basket etc and time ran out, but hopefully there will be no more leaks when I do it.

thanks again for the advice.... it does help to know others out there have an interest. :-)

Scotty, I have rigged up a pump which runs off the end of a dril. I put a long 15mm coper pipe into the tank and pump out into large lemonade bottles, suctioning the **** off the bottom of the tank. I have done this every year, and the tank is now spotless - but it is an annual ritual. Luckily the filler (only 30mm across) is in the middle of the top of the tank.

Get all the dirt out and keep it clean!

Sounds like a good idea and something that could be done at any time.

Any advice on where to get these small drill pumps Chris?

I had a weep on the sight tube of my 100l tank. The survey also objected to the sight tube as a fire risk. I drained the tank with a power drill pump into a plastic dustbin standing on the cockpit sole. Fitted a tap to isolate the sight tube and fitted a new sight tube from a domestic heating oil tank. Pumped the fuel back in. All done in next to no time - and no heavy lifting!

Rob.

Hi Rob
I shall probably have to do similar.
I've ordered the pump as/Chris and will possibly have a look at it sometime in the new year.
I'm running out of diesel containers though.
Is there a 4 - 6mm ID plastic see through pipe that is approved for this use I can refit?

I've also got about 25 litres of 'foggy' diesel in my containers. Is there an simple way of filtering it..... filter papers to fit inside a funnel etc?

oh how I hate the smell of diesel!
