We are about to buy a hot air diesel heater and the final choice is between two: Webasto or Mikuni. If the decision were on price alone I would choose the Mikuni but the boat builders recommend Webasto as it can be fitted in the vertical plain with the hot air O/L at the bottom and so it makes installation easier. Does anyone know if Mikuni can be fitted in a like manner. The expert I spoke to didn't think so but i can't see any great difference in the units from an engineering point of view. I think I could adapt the installation to take the Mikuni horizontally as they have been fitted to other boats but at what difficulty I don't know.

BTW,I have an almost new Webasto on my 38' and I needed extra help from an electric heater to feel warm in -4C outer temp...
Also almost no heat in front cabin from the second outlet there...
Anyone knows if the Webasto termostat can be set to provied MORE heat?for longer intervals?
Do I need to isolate the pipes? with what?
TIA

I ebayed my old webasto rather that spend money on it.
i fitted a Mikuni MY30 in my 37 footer (but the internal volume would equate to a modern 34 footer) its very good no complaints to date.
i do re-circulate the air from the cabin & all the duct is insulated, no point heating lockers if they don't need it.
the Mikuni is noisier but this is due to a more powerful fan i think.
we have 4 outlets

My Webasto 3500 overheats my 35' boat most of the time and would cope with -4c just about.

What Webasto model no. do you have? A 2000 would be under sized for your boat.

Before I contemplated buying a heater I obtained a copy of the fitting notes from the manufacturer of the yacht and they do show the Webasto fitted vertically. To be sure I checked with Webasto at the LBS and they assured me it was perfectly OK as long as it was fitted with the hot air O/L downwards.

Maybe too small for a 38'?

I fitted a mikuni my30 to beleza , at 44' with wheelhouse, saloon, huge aft cabin and large forecabin, it heats it up no problem, and that was when I kept her in North wales in the winter.

Noise, not that its any noiser than my mates webasto airtop, I reduced to minimum by insulating the outlet tube from the heater prior to the first T off.
