seems a daft thing to ask maybe

Bayliner had this great idea of putting a horn in the chain locker and a grill on the outer side at the bow to let the sound out.

Ive removed the defunct unit, wiring seems all good though. So im wondering what to do...

Refit what looks to be a car type horn in its standard location for a general everyday 'beep beep'

or would an air horn style trumpet on the exterior be better suited? for a more manly sounding 'baaaaaaaaarp'

i dont know if it'd look daft up at the bow or not. Id rather not have to cut more holes and then have to cover this 1 up so i dont wish to move the location and re wire

From personal experience unless you pay a fortune, the horns outside don't last very long. I recently bought a cheap airhorn from ebay and mounted it inside the radar arch. Still very loud, will just have to see how long it lasts.

funnily enough that the 1 thats popped up on my initial search

It's LOUD and the noise is instant as in no waiting for the compressor to spin up. I had thought of mounting it in the anchor locker instead of outside on top of the radar arch but would have had the hassle of running the cables. Sticking it inside the radar arch made it a five minute job.

currently - theres a bracket whhich is ruined bolted through the side - i dont know the technical name but its just above the rubbing strip. Theres a grill on th eouter hull and mounted in the chain locker

On this image ive located on google - on the bow, mine is probly about 6" further back than this, i just think if i stick to the original plan, an airhorn style would take up too much room internally, i did debate running the tube out of the oval cover and mounting the trmpet on the side but after a look at photos it may not look at great

ive got the whole lot out, so need to make up a new mount and fit.

What about a hand held gas horn as used at football matches very loud and no electrical parts to fail
good to surprise wife when she doses off

lol i think that goes against my own health and safety but i like your thinking!

located a replacement that should fit in its original location that looking at feedback, didnt sound too weedy so just to sort out a bracket for now. im sure the kids will tell me if its not loud enough

Hi symondo. Not a daft thing to ask at all.

Colregs (as ever) come into play with sound signals and if the boat is more than 12m loa, a horn that complies with the requirements is required. Each horn that complies comes with its own certified approval certificate. And yes, they are loud. Very loud, just check the dB levels required. If less than 12m, you only need something that makes a noise.

The comment re waiting for a compressor to spin up only applies if the installation is incorrect. If the compressor is close to the horn, spin up time is virtually eliminated. If the horn is powered by stored compressed air, the solendoid that opens the air to the horn must be as close to the horn as poss.

Most non-approved horns corrode quickly and fail. That's why you see them either hidden in anchor lockers (!), pointing downwards (to alert the fish?) or even backwards....! It's crazy! If you are over 12m, the horn should be pointing straight forward. Enough of the preach.

Toby (Groot T) of this parish is the guru. I'm just his Dad!

The Bayliner one can be brought back to life. A good clean with WD40 and then connect to power and adjust the small interrupter bolt for maximum noise.

if you could bring this back to life you have some skills!

I had to drill the head off the screw to get the bracket off too so i guess i'll be making up a fresh bracket also....

for a few quid i'll chuck in a new unit

i did wonder if it had to be a certain noise level, my boat is 8M so i guess it'll do the job as per the old unit. i just dont want to sound like a fiat 500 from the 70's should i need to use it lol

I had a very nice stainless electric horn but it stopped working after a while. On stripping I found the actual electrical horn mechanism made from mild steel that has rusted like your top pic.

I got some air horns with plastic trumpets cut then down to fit inside the old stainless outers and fitted the compressor come where dry and out of the way.

All works fine now.

The ones posted were chrome plated zinc and again in a sea water environment would not last long unless protected very well from salt spray.
