my boat doesnt have one and SWMBO wants one. I have bought the table top and a socket and pole set up ( Howells call it a pedastal set) but I am nervous about cutting the necessary hole in my nice teak laid cockpit floor. So I'm looking for re-assurance from someone who has such a table mounting that it works and is stable.

The alternative is the swivel type set up but this looked much clunkier to me.

What sort of table support system do you have?

My boat came with the floor sockets (the surface mounted type) mounted on oblong pieces of wood that fitted across the cockpit to provide side to side stability with two used to provide forward and back stability. No need to cut the floor.

we have a Dutch leg bu Zwvardis ( i think ) it is a Z shape with a fixing plate that fits the cockpit side. it is very good, the table can be set athwort ship or lenghtways between the benches

I've just fitted one of those Lagun tables ... nicely made aluminium fittings, works well, good and solid, and when not in use can swivel every which way to keep it out of the way. Not cheap but there are several versions and it could also be used down below with another fitting to slot it into.

I picked up a pair of these:

and cannot recommend them enough. Very solidly built and good quality. I picked mine up in Gibraltar out of a 'bosun's bin' type thingy. Just tried to search for a UK supplier without success but there are several US suppliers who may be able to assist.

Depends on the layout of your cockpit. Mine are bolted on to the front of the binnacle and the whole table folds down flat against this when not in use.

No connection etc.

The simplist method is to put a hinge one side of the table to fix it to your chosen cockpit position and fix a folding leg to the outermost edge which has a hinge in the middle to allow it to fold - easy and cheap ;) Leg can be locked out with a catch!
