Fititng a thimble

I want to fit a thimble to the end of a 6mm braided line. What's the ideal type of whipping or is it seizing? Thanks.

An eye splice is the strongest method, and probably the neatest. Various websites show how to do one.

Eye splice. If it ends up a little slack and you're worried the thimble might fall out, a simple seizing around the two parts just after the splice will tighten it up.

Ah, just seen we're only talking 6mm. I've never tried, but I guess that might be a bit fiddly to splice in braid (all my small stuff is 3-strand). In that case, perhaps a racking seizing? Google can no doubt explain it better than I can.

Defo can't splice it, was thinking of seizing. No great strain will be on the line.

Had to do something similar for a halyard, so I sewed the eye in before applying the whipping.

I've just bought a bucketful of Racal antennae guy-ropes, mostly 6mm (well, at a quid each, for 60ft of quality 3-strand - you've gotta have a go ...), and the hard eyes are secured by aluminium ferrules. Lazy sods. Still I suppose clamping a ferrule is marginally quicker than splicing ...

Here are three tips:~

First tip:~make the bight tight around the groove of the thimble by pulling evenly on both strands while the thimble is "anchored" to some fixed suitable hook or the loop of a secured rope.

Secondly, while it is under tension put a quick whipping round the shoulders to hold the rope firmly in place.

Thirdly, once the work is done and the thimble seats snugly in the eye, place it on a metal surface to act as an anvil and take hammer and gently tap the rims to flatten round.

This makes the grip more secure and additionally avoids any wear should you ever need to pass a rope through the eye as often thimbles have edges that cause wear through rubbing should you ever need or wish to do this.
