Has anyone had any experience of fitting an after market windscreen wiper system.

I've got a 22ft power boat that I would like to fit a single wiper to in the event I get caught out in the rain again.

Any experiences, tips or recommendations gratefully received.

Cheers

I'd avoid the ones with a 6mm round motor spindle to which is "clamped" a splined adaptor that the arm fits on to...predictably,even with a low-power motor & small blade, this can easily slip (well, mine did).

The Roca stuff with real motor spindle, (aqua-marine sell it, but only via chandlers etc, though asap-supplies used to keep it), looks good value & not too flimsy. Some of the better stuff is alarmingly expensive for a small boat.

Thanks for that. Do you know if the Vetus model is a clamped type, this seems to be the only one I can find locally however I didn't look to see if it was clamped?

The vetus ORW has a 6mm spindle (price £41,inc arm, blade & motor)-my american equivalent worked well for a while......& now needs an extra clamp-screw+studlock (least I hope that'll work)

I'd recommend you sit at the helm and work out exactly which area you want cleared and spend some time working out where to drill the hole before you do it, check for access behind that the motor will fit and there aren't any flanges or reinforcing box sections where you want to install the motor. Most motors have a selection of sweep angles you can choose rom by removing the back plate on the gearbox and moving a pin in the linkage so establish what the maximum sweep you can obtain is with the blade parking out of the way. Sounds complicated I know but you will see what I mean once you come to do the job, good luck. Steve

I have a pilothouse sailing cruiser with one wiper installed by the builder for the original owner. After six years, I really wish he had had two installed, one each side. Don't know how big your boat is, but do consider installing two. When the visibility is bad, having a crewmember watch as well sure helps.
