The above facility is currently "off station" so mooring space on the quay is severely restricted again. However this time it is more restricted than usual as the pontoons have been parked so as to block the entire south east corner of the quay, leaving room for only 8 yachts on the west quay.

It's always breaking loose whenever there's a brisk S-SE. usually they get it up and running within a week or so. It usually comes adrift late at night with several unfortunate, gormless charterers attached.

I am trying to understand the use of the word 'gormless' above to describe charterers. As I understand it the meaning of that word is - lacking sense or initiative; foolish.

Is it because they are charterers or is it because they tied to a pontoon? In either case I would not think it the best way of describing another sailor who happens not to be on their own boat at the time in this manner! Or is it just that I am out of touch with current views?

It's because they go to sleep safe in the knowledge that they are berthed on a pontoon, whereas if they had any awareness of their situation they would realise that the place is completely open to southerly winds with a long fetch. Every year this happens on a few occasions and there is carnage. It is rarely a secret that the wind will blow from the south and it is not far to an anchorage where they will be safe. Basic seamanship.

Looking at the webcam it appears that the pontoon might be back in service. Can anyone confirm please?

What exactly can you see? If the pontoons are in the corner then that is where they have been parked which itself severely reduces further the available space. Also, when I took a close look, all the electrical connections were dangling down into the water. It will take a long time to get those re-newer.

Just taken a look at the webcam and clearly the pontoons are NOT in place. They usually occupy the space in front of the White House with the long dark windows and the white parasols. One unwise yacht seems to have moored to the end of one in it's temporary parking space.

Pontoon definitely not in place last week. We saw more than one boat attempt to moor up to the wooden pontoon, which was neatly stacked against the quay and looking inviting, and then drag the pontoon to the boat once they tried to tighten up on the anchor chain. One poor soul was left bewildered and isolated on the quay whilst his wife merrily pulled the boat and pontoon further and further out towards the fairway.

Actually wouldn't have gone far Cynthia since the furthest from th quay pontoon was chained to mooring blocks on the seabed. Still riskey though in a blow. Boss of the "Falcon" was not a happy bunny though!

How is Merve and the medical progeny? Ours are both now Registrars

Lots of boats moored in front of the white house yesterday. I guess they could have been anchored in a raft if the pontoon is still AWOL.

what they were doing week before last is anchoring and long-lining to a solid object ashore, in front of said white house, not to the laid-up pontoon remains which would indeed be very dicey. I prefer anchoring across the bay and taking a line to a ring or a rock, quieter and more secure (but the holding is not good). Asked at the chandler's, was told "any day now will be fix".
