Fishing ..

I remember now. The only time I've been involved in catching mackerel from a boat I was on a friend's yacht on the Clyde. He was fishing and I was helming. He caught a fish as we were about to go about before hitting Bute. he suggested holding course until he'd landed it. In the kerfuffle of him trying to land the fish (successfully) and me trying to go about before running aground (largely successfully), we managed to wrap his wife, who had been on the foredeck, up in the genoa.
Oh we did laugh.

Look out for a plastic oil can often moored where yachts transit. Pull up the cage thingy, there's often a lobster or crab inside. Good way to make friends with the locals as well.

The fish we had.

The beauties left us with our rods still dangling!

Mind you our fingers had a fishy smell for some time though !

No problem this side of the pond. Trolling seems to be a speed thing and I get best results around 5.5knts. Last thing I caught was a Wahoo measured 5ft2in No scales so couldn't weigh it. Sad thing was with no freezer on board we were only able to devour a fraction and had to toss the rest overboard. Keep trying! Ps, I use the cheapest rubber squidy looking lures with a double hook. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Easy Jimi, just come up here to the Clyde, stand in cockpit and shout mackeral,at least 3 will jump into cockpit........put one in lobster pot and within 3 hours 2 nice lobsters on the plate...........and oh yes during all of this not another boat in sight.

Tight lines

Paul.

To catch fish. Go out from Brighton. Stop boat. Rolly heavy motion. Throw up. Put out anything you like involving hook and shiny thing. Catch 20 mackerel( throwing up is essential- the mackerel love it). Eat some fresh. Put rest in freezer for 1 year then throw away. Easy.

Re: Mackeral at this time of year?

I dunno, just chuck in the paravaney twinkly stuff and they just appear on the hooks. Only catch as much as could be eaten, i.e one catch, sometimes get more than one on a hook. There's not a lot really to know about fishing for mackerel, nor do they seem to be in limited stocks.
