If you go on a trip with him, please ensure that Lisa realises that just because you were in Twickenham, I was in no way involved. Do not park on the riverside coz you'll get a ticket and take enough clothes for a few days coz seaspray will have you out on the lash before you know it. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I know nothing about fishing, I've only ever caught a starfish! Knowing very few fishermen (yourself, Duncan and BarryH) I can only assume that what you say is the first truth a fisherman has ever uttered. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

hmmmm.........just burn the juice and head for the needles If it's a weekend join the other boats out there and chuck a whole squid on a big hook and strong snood (100lb nylon). and make sure it's on the bottom.
Will work fine between now and the end of January.
Bass, Rays, Conger and Cod.
Best of Luck
ps overnight the day before at Yarmouth and run out ealry for the best spots/fishing.

I'd like top do more fishing! Have the gear but lack the knowledge - I used to be OK course fishing but this sea stuff is all new. I had the fright of my life a few years ago when out "practising" with a couple of mates off the Nab - hooked into what looked like a shark - I guess it was a tope (my mate lost it trying to heave the thing in!) I'd like to know more about catching stuff I can eat/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

hi Nick
There are a number of places to go in the solent. Just west on the east brambles bouy, the water drops to 40 feet. I have had some good fishing, thornback ray, the odd cod. Or the nab tower is ok, but can get bizzy, you will get all sorts there. or the needles, good for cod, conger and doggies. Just south of st catherines point is also good.

Hi Nick

As from mid Oct onwards until mid Feb the Cod will be in the Solent, the bait you will need mainly is Squid ,roughly 5LB box per trip per man,
Fish at the bottom of the dropoffs where the water goes from 30/40 feet to around 60 feet near NE Gurnard Bouy, West Leape Bouy ect.
Fairly stiff rod around the 30/50LB class, for line use Braid, 8/0 hooks and weights ranging from 8ozs to 1LB 12ozs
Their is a lot more , but this will put you in with a very good chance of catching.

Dave
