Winters on its way and the family have a dislike for cold weather and boats. Any fishermen out there who would like the odd outing over the winter months. I'm determined not to winterise again this year and keep using the thing. Plus the fact the normal charter boat I use has just hiked the price to 75 quid a day, even running on petrol I wouldn't spend that.

Might like to take you up on that Barry, would be nice to have a look at a different area. My boat will be fully functional soon as she is coming out to have the outdrive done next week, so perhaps I could reciprocate, the cod fishing here can be quite reasonable. Your charter boats are B****y expensive!!!! £25.00 for 8 hours here, and £12.00 per pound for lug so average day out, boat and bait is £50.00/£60.00 all in !!!! let me know in advance so i can make the plans !!!

They guy I use/d run out of Deal. Supply and demand! He knows the waters round there like the back of his hand. He knows all the productive marks round the Goodwins, even after the half bottle of scotch! He's in demand more and more, like anyone in that position he's capitalized on it.
I phoned him yesterday and he's booked until the end of November, even for mid week dates.

Thought it would be a good idea to see if anybody else wanted to do it. It'll open up oppotunities to fish other areas and maybe save a few bob splitting the costs.

Suppose we're lucky here,at the most it is a 40 min steam @ 12knts to some very productive marks, out of Swansea. The boat i use is rarely empty and unless you book 6 wks in advance you won't get a spot, We only use up to 8oz of weight in about 40ft of water. Not like you guys with a 1lb and a half in a 100 ft not sure whether thats fishing or body building !!!! but i appreciate what your'e saying as you have to travel a lot further, so the cost has to be that much higher.

Hi All,

I too do not want to winterise the boat this year. However I have very little experience in Sea fishing, If I want to play about in the solent and dangle the rod for a few hours (no smut please!) what set up is best used and what can I expect to catch other than a cold?? Any good places to anchor up?

Thanks

Nick.

Grab yourself a copy of Sea Angler, from the newsagents, there should be plenty of info in there about winter Cod fishing, and get yourself out on at least 1 charter boat if the Skipper is any good you will learn all the basics very quickly far better than mags, fraid i havn't fished the solent in the last 20 yrs so i guess i am well out of date with places to go !!!!!

£12 a pound for lugworm!? You could buy fish cheaper than the cost of the bait. Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a fork and dig em yourself?

Lugworm's not much used over here as we don't get a lot of cod. Most species round Alderney are more partial to ragworm, either the small local ones scratched up from under rocks, or imported King Rag.

Bill.

One of these days I'll have a boat that WORKS

There are a couple of books out for solent fishing marks, but I tend to find that they are out of date as soon as they hit the book shelves. There's a website for solent fishing and sods law dictates that I can't remember the addy and I've just reformatted my hard drive!

From memory theres more fishing to be had in the east rather than the west. I'll see if I can find that site.

Found the addy for that web site http://www.solent-fishing-guide.co.uk. Its worth keeping an eye on it from time to time.

traitor.............and I'll put a case of Mountgay on the last bit! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
see pm offer (made before I saw this) - fishing all day Sunday, zero bait costs and your quarter share of the fuel costs for 3 hours running time is...er........ 2.68; just bring me a pasty for lunch and we'll call it quits /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

[tongue in cheek]Ah but you missed the important bit,
"Always interested in a fishing trip, particularly if you know what you are doing!"[/tongue in cheek]

that's the bit I was prepared to stake a case of Mountgay on......../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Anyway you just have a good weekend at work and I'll go fishing (after doing further house painting)

Question - why is house painting so boring relative to antifouling?

Oh right, I feel a bit of a challange/comp in the making! Is the gauntlet down or not?

House painting is boring because, your told to do it and don't make a decision to do it yourself!

I would certainly be up for it ,a day fishing particularly at a new location is always welcome. Had a brilliant day bass fishing last week, chartered a boat to myself out off Falmouth , a bit extravagant but at least its £200 that will not get spent on wallpaper!!
If you have still got any mackerel around , have a go at fly fishing for them , we do it from my little boat when we are in Scotland ,great sport on light tackle.

Now if there is a competition coming along you'll both want me on your boat because I'm the only one who'll catch any fish /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

So far the Mountgay and diesel has it, so what's your offer Barry?

Mountgay a diesel huh! Well erm, theres the hamper of food lovingly prepared by the other half. A damn good selection of beers. A damn fine selection of single malts and guarantee'd good days fishing. None of that down tide stuff. Uptiding is the way to go. Works all the time. Your not fishing in the "scare" area. Damn now I'm letting out all my secrets.
In all seriousness, a friendly comp/match would be a good idea. Make a weekend of it before the weather really closes in. Must be a catch and release though or there'll just be too many fish in my boat!

Ok with all that tucker and drink on board there'll be no room for me - let alone the fish.

All sounds like a good idea and might even be getting in a bit of practice this weekend. Just tell me where and when and I'll bring the beer.
