Evening all,

I'm thinking of taking my rod with me on Jester, what bait/lure is likely to succeed, I'm not interested in catching Moby Dick.

As always grateful thanks for any replies

David

Race ???

you are entering the jester to race are you not

Oh dear here we go - I should have expected such a silly response. Jester is NOT a race please do your homework - it was as serious question, but if it is beneath you to reply in a like vein then kindly save your answers for elsewhere.

Have caught the odd fish by trailing a line with something shiny attached in NW Scotland.

If you manage to catch MD you're probably *****d.

Good hunting!

i never bring a rod on board - hand line is much better. Catch a few macs and use one for bait if you want bigger stuff. Two or three fresh macks are ideal IMO

Forget it.

If you have the misfortune catch anything you will end up with scales, blood and guts all over the boat.

Not if you stick to catching sardine sized fish which you can pop in your mouth whole and raw. Try to remember to remove the hook first before swallowing though.

Cheers, Brian

Only thing you are likely to catch is mackrel but if you are going more that 2 knots forget it. Not because the fish cant swim that fast but because you'll never get the lure deep enough. On second thoughts I believe you can tow something called a hydrovane that keeps the lures down but never tried it.
If you do decide to try for mackrel they will attack almost anything you put on a hook. Feathers are the most common and cheapest lures for them.
As pointed out If you do get one try and handle it over the side as they do make a mess everywhere. Have a bucket of water handy and a brush to wash off any scales or blood right away before it dries.
PS when they get scared they also SH!T everywhere.

a can of this is useful

We sling a line with a small wooden board about 3m from the hook. The movement of the water drives the board down and somehow when a fish takes the hook it flips round and comes back to the surface. This is coastal sailing.

Many a fine fresh mackrel supper has been eaten. :D

We do it all the time and do very well, travelling South headed for Cairns mid December just gone with a single spoon lure out the back and under full sail when the fishing started screaming.

Pulled in a very respectable salt and pepper Queen fish, but only just before the sharks arrived.

Dropped the in trinity inlet just out from the casino, put the crab pot in a 2 very nice guests for dinner came up to join us, I suggested a few prawns would make us all (4 guests aboard) a very nice dinner, ran the tender over to a nearby creek (Within shouting distance ) and came back with almosy half a bucket of creek prawns, not the largest but very sweet.

The longest I ever sailed with a lue out and no fish was from Mackay Marina to point just west of Palm island well north of the Whitsunday Islands.

Good luck with your fishing..... :)
