I regularly fish whilst sailing. On the whole I mainly catch Mackeral but also catch Pollack fairly frequently (which I tend to chuck back but I'm told is not bad for some cooking), Gar occasionally and Bass only once or twice (sadly). On the whole with my very basic set-up I never fail to catch something. It is a simple boat rod with a paravane and set of feathers. I have tried a number of other lures but feathers is always the most successful. I'm not sure if my use of feathers is somewhat limiting the diversity of catch but there is nothing wrong with flapping fresh mackeral fried or just dropped raw in lemon or lime juice for a minute or so and eaten with a bit of pepper as a snack with a cold beer. Enjoy.
As regards the difficulty of sailing and fishing, my tip is to ease the sheets when you get a bite so you hang on to the catch and make the reeling in easier.
