Fishing net on the Blackwater

Enjoying a gentle sail up to Osea on the tide yesterday afternoon. Pot marker to starboard - then noticed small buoy to port - and then another - and then another. Awmigawd it's a fishing net. Quick tack and burst of engine to get round the end of it. No signal from fishing boat standing off.

Spoke to him back in Bradwell as he was clearing the herring from his nets "You nearly had me there - never seen a net on this river" - grin from fisherman "It is a bit unusual" he agrees.

Not even a few herring offered /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Is he allowed to lay a net in the river? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Shouldn't think so - esp if it impedes passage in the deep water channel

I assume that he is the river bailiff. Perhaps we could forgive the fisherman one go when he though nobody was about BUT next time I'll report him. A net across the deep water channel is not on. The seal was enjoying a lazy supper though.

I have seen this several times at dusk normally between Stone and Bradwell. Its normally patrolled by a launch with a pot hauler on the stern quarter. Tell Nigel Harmer and he will have a word with them.

Nigel has no reponsibility east of the Fisheries buoy in the middle of Marconi Moorings.... I think then it's the normal Kent & Essex Fisjery authority

I emailed Nigel Harmer, the River Bailiff asking if it was allowed to lay a net across the main channel. This is entire text of his reply:
