Hi all

Now that the forecast for next week w/c 18 June is beginning to look pretty good for boating, I foolishly offered to take some friends out on the boat mid week for a day fishing.

I have managed to scrounge some rods, reels and bottom tackle etc. but I am not sure where to take them, what bait to use and even where to buy bait. We are berthed in Bursledon on the Hamble.

Its pretty much Spring tides mid week with High tide at lunchtime. Can anyone give advice what bait to take and where we should try dropping the hooks?

Many Thanks

bait....squid and rag. Any pouting that you catch can be cut into strips and hooked along with the squid.

Seen a fair few boats just off of Bramble bank. Seems to be productive. Watch where the charter boats head for.....on springs try and uptide rig, ie a grip lead, cast well uptide of the boat.

You're in Bursledon - how can you not know about the bait shop, Sammy's, behind the Chinese restaurant?!*. Great for bait & advice - my hubby can spend hours in there. It's in the main road oppo Deacon's yard. Hubby normally buys black lug or rag worm as bait. Or go to Forts for mackerel & use fillets to catch bass. "Fish the 20M line at Stokes Bay" says my trusted hunter gatherer.

Good luck fishing :-)

That's convenient thanks - We are not local and since we don't go fishing I guess I've never noticed it. Ridiculous really considering the number of times I have driven back from Force 4:)

Weed will be bad in the Solent all summer. Avoid big tides or head East. Mackerel can be caught just about anywhere on the drift using feathers or small lures.

Hill Head: Anchor about 400yds offshore of the Yachtclub. Use 2/0=4/0 hooks with hard back or peeler crab baits. You will pick up Smoothounds. This is a shallow area.

Bramble Bank: Fish on early flood so that baits trail doen the bank. Use long flowing hooklenghts baited with Mackerel or cuttle and squid in winter. Species include Rays and Bass in the summer and Autumn and od in Winter.

Northern edge of the North Channel: Wll fish generally well along it its entire length from Gillkicker to Lee on the Solent. Specie will include Dogfish, Rays, Bass, Cod, Pout and a few Bream. The 2 small wrecks off Browndown and Gillkicker are normally reliable.

Haslar Wall: Trolling lures along the wall at 5-6 knots will produce Bass.

No Mans Land Fort: This is a Mackerel holding area. Drift using feathers or lures between the fort and the Channel buoy. If you throw Hokai lures up against the wall of the fort and let them sink you can also pick up Pollack.

Area East of the Blocks: This can throw up a few Plaice, use Ragworm and size 2 hooks.
