Fishing in Greece, Are you legal?

Don't forget to renew the licence(s) every year for a very small fee or you have to go all the way again (with the initial fees).

This is news to me so thanks for posting it. I'll get a boat license next year.

We caught a very nice Amberjack just outside Argostoli. Must have weighted about 6 or 7 kilo's. Exceptionally good eating.

To get the boat licence you have to take your boat registration papers to the port police and apply for the fishing licence, you will probably have to take a piece of paper to the tax office, pay and get it stamped, then take it back to the PP and pay the fee. Over a certain amount the PP have to make sure that tax has been paid because in the past it is rumoured to have been (ahem) trousered!. The 14 euro rod licence can be done straight away.

Thank you for the info young man

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and actually I already wrote a post here, but I guess it was blocked or something, because I just registered.

I see miyagimoon had experience with the Port Police in Skopelos and that Davy_S hangs out with PP somewhere else, so maybe this is the right place for me to ask :)

I live in Serbia and I went to Skopelos 4 times now and I'm planning to take my family there this year as well. Last year I borrowed a pneumatic spear gun from a friend, since I always wanted to try spear fishing (I use to fish when I was younger back home - rod, river, friends...) and I love freediving (amateur, when ever I get the chance on a holiday, 10-15m deep max)... So I went to the PP in Skopelos town and ended up talking to the chief of Police and first they were ready to give me the license, but then they realized that Serbia is not yet a EU member state and that they are not able to issue me the license. I can dive, but I can't fish :(

Interesting enough was that the chief didn't want to tell me that in person but rather told a desk officer to inform me of this and left, as if he wanted me to know "ok, you're an amateur, probably can't catch anything anyway, just go and try not to drown yourself trying". But, even though I saw many Italian tourists who really didn't look like they knew what they were doing with their spear guns and probably didn't have a license for it, I really couldn't do it knowing, as you say in the subject of this thread, that I wasn't legal.

This year I got a hold of a Cressi Geronimo really cheep and couldn't say no to buying it, so my questions are:

1. Is there a way for a non EU citizen to get a license in Greece?
(I read that few years ago no EU citizens could get it if they had a Greek citizen go with them to PP and show his Tax number and some tax document, something like a guarantee for my lic.)

2. If not, do you guys think anyone would bother me, being as not even an amateur since I never even tried it yet?
(I'll probably be staying on a beach and I wanted at least to try how the geronimo works, how precise it is and how it feels, sine I never used a spear gun before. I wanted to do it early morning before people got on the beach, 200m from it (as regulated by the law), with a buoy, etc.)

Thank you all very much since it is very hard for us who don't speak Greek to get any valid info on this.

P.S. Sorry for the long post :D

Just heard on the news, no more amateur's fishing license on a new law.
This will free up 850 people to be alocated into more interesting activities (like chasing you and me for not having paid the new tax - ha)

This is great news for non-EU citizens, since we can't get the licence by the current law.

Thanks for sharing Pelissima and hope you'll post more info when it happens or how ever it resolves.

As I just read, they decided to go from "no more recreational fishing license" to "no more recreational licenses for tourist boats over 7m". Sounds like a joke.
Maybe someone from Greece will correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe someone from Greece can translate and maybe tell us when this new Law starts to apply?
But I think this is it :)

ΦΕΚ Α' 92,άρθρο 14 παρ. 2 (δημοσιεύτηκε στις 14 Απριλίου 2014):
"Καταργείται η ατοµική ερασιτεχνική άδεια αλιείας,

It applies since 14/4/2014.
Please note that regulations and restrictions about the means and tools used, number and size of fish, selling the fish and periods that fishing is not allowed still apply. You just don't have to bear a (amateur's) fishing permit for you or your boat any more. Unless of course you are a professional where nothing changed.

Thanks Glyka.
That's great news. Of course all the other regulations must be respected.
The important thing for me is that before I couldn't get a license because I don't come from an EU country and now there is no such restriction.
