Fishing email

Another email this morning from skywalker yacht Scott Jowa asking for details included in a zip about my boat for sale in YBW for sale section. What must I do :delete or open ?Thanks

Do not open the zip file under any circumstances.

Is the email from a gmail.com account? If so ignore.

If it is from a recognisable domain, and you think it is a serious enquiry, you could reply sending them a few details but explain that you are not prepared to open a zip file that you can't verify.

Best wishes

Adrian

FYI, my .aim and .aol webmail pages (not sure about others, but doesn't seem to work on my Googlemail work a/c) allow me to right click suspicious/any emails.
This views the message source and clearly shows whether it is dodgy/not allowed/spammed and, I believe the sender does not get a mail received tag. Try it on a trusted email-

What is the significance of the gmail.com then, is that a particular warning sign?

Such addresses as gmail, hotmail & outlook are free and can be opened without verification. They aren't linked to an ISP so can be an easy way to operate anonymously on the web. They are not in themselves evidence of bad intent - I have used a hotmail address myself for 17 years - but taken with other clues like 'dear customer', bad spelling, zip attachments and dodgy links they build up a picture.

Thanks for that. I am pretty wary but nearly fell for one this morning from a source I knew. Just said: " About the video CLICK HERE for full message"

It was plausible but just stopped myself in time.

All the phishing attempts I have seem have been pretending to be someone in a sailing related business, and all those businesses had domain names. All of the emails came from an account set up at gmail.com. If you want to fool someone into thinking you are someone else you can set up an email at gmail using their name to get an email address such as tednovakowski001@gmail.com so you go "oh look it is Ted Novakowski", but Ted's real email is ????@soundyachting.com (I just used ??? to cover what it really is). So the gmail.com is false and the use of a gmail account can be an indicator that someone is impersonating someone else.

The same can be said of hotmail but that seems to be out of fashion with phishers at the moment.

Hope this explains it

Gentlemen,

My name is Paul White. I'm the owner of Sea Change Yacht Sellers. It has come to my attention that this Scott Jowa person has been making inquiries into various vessels under the name of both Sky Walker Yachts and my company, Sea Change Yacht Sellers. Please know that we have absolutely no affiliation with this clown. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could forward any correspondence you may receive from him to info@seachangeyachts.com. I'd really like to track this guy down.

Thank you in advance,

Paul White
