Fishing Close Season

Re: Improving ...Could do better ?

I've seen the aftermath. One burnt out disposable BBQ, assorted rubbish (polish lager cans, empty cigarette packets with polish health warnings)and one swan carcass with its breast meat cut out. No other sign of injury, definitely not a fox(unless it was a very fussy fox with a sharp knife).
That was on the Thames at Walton.
The local sports fisherman have been complaining about Eastern Europeans for years. You can't stop them. They see it as free food or free money.

Re: Improving ...Could do better ?

The police used to regularly drive the footpath on the Surrey side after dark from Ham House to Teddington Lock. I think this was to stop the 'doggers' but it presumably also kept other miscreants on their toes (and the doggers off their knees and elbows). They stopped doing this in 2017 and most of the summer there were regular barbeques going until late in the night along this section of the river accompanied by groups of 6-8 fishermen. I've no evidence that swans or other wildfowl were being targetted but based on the above observation it will be worth keeping an eye on this when they start again. It would be nice to see the police take 5-10 mins to again drive down this section once each evening to be 'aware' of what's going on down there and discourage any 'illegal activity' among the many who seem to use this section after dark in summer. Last year there were a group of youths throwing stones at passing boats (including the party boats) which could have had horrible consequences.

You remind me of a day in the EA office, Shepperton when a telephone complaint came in from a local Weybridge councillor about fishing parties, fishermen cutting down trees to build fires, mounds of litter, human excrement and dogging on Desborough Island . As the muppet in charge of complaints at that time (mostly dealing with old blokes on big cruisers moaning about unmanned locks, yawn), I had to explain to the lady that we couldn't police the island after dark and dogging hadn't been invented per se in 1932 so the Thames Conservancy Act didn't cover it.

Later, a colleague wanted to erect warning signs stating that lighting fires, littering and dogging were not permitted. Again, I had to remind her that dogging isn't unlawful under the TCA 1932 and we couldn't mention it. The amended signs were put up and promptly disappeared.

Happy days!

Re: Improving ...Could do better ?

When the weather improves, the Teddington Lock gay dogging season starts. Over the bridge they come, on the prowl in Ham Lands. You have to watch where you're treading in the long grass and the woods towards Ham House are best avoided.
My dogs regularly retrieve baby oil bottles, a fellow walker told me that his terrier once appeared out of the bushes with a dildo in his mouth! Wouldn't give it up, had this poor bloke and his FIL chasing after it! (The owner of the dog BTW, not the dildo!)

Interestng, OG, isn't it, that no rancour had occurred until your untimely and inappropriate response to my post in which I supported fishermen, though mildly chastiseing boaties for not bothering to make even the tiniest research before launching into print lambasting fishermen.

I declare you hoist by your own rancourous petard, OG.

Everyone associated with rivers knows the depradations caused by E Europeans, we don't need to post specific examples to pander to an obsession for specific examples to prove a generality.

Must dig out a monochrome taken with a Brownie 127.
Nice shot of young lad with a really neat split cane with centre pin circa 1963 . :)
