Surely they are in direct contravention of the TSS? :/

Bit vague but apparently not..rule 10

(e) A vessel other than a crossing vessel or a vessel joining or leaving a lane shall not normally enter a separation zone or cross a separation line except:
(i) in cases of emergency to avoid immediate danger.
(ii) to engage in fishing within the separation zone.

It was broadcast from Dover that boats were fishing in the lanes and to keep a good lookout.

On one of the 'Trawlermen' programs on TV last week, one skipper, I believe from Brixham, went to fish off the South Coast. Finding the fishing areas thick with Belgian Super Trawlers, he headed out to fish in the Separation Zone (I assume), rather than the Separation Lane. Looks like Rule 10 allows him to cross the Separation Lane to fish in the separation Zone.

Just found this:

Handbook of the Nautical Rules of the Road by Llana & Wisneskey

"Fishing is permitted within a traffic lane so long as the fishing vessel proceeds along the lane with the rest of the traffic and does not "impede" other vessels following the traffic lane. If the vessel engaged in fishing follows a course that obliges a vessel following the traffic lane to alter course or speed, then the fishing vessel had impeded the other vessel and is therefore in violation of this requirement."

Some caution - that's an American book, and they march to their own beat in some areas. If you can find Cockcroft and Lameijer's Guide to the Collision Avoidance Rules that's a superior reference.

From the screenshots, I didn't see any infractions, other than the FV going the wrong way between two heavies - but that may have been forced by the requirement to not impede.

For general info only, Canadian colregs do not prohibit fishing vessels from going the wrong way in the lanes - as long as they don't impede vessels using the lanes.

Not the most recent edition but you can get a pdf of the 6th edition here http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...i2gPgH&usg=AFQjCNF0CqJ2rvw4MvukbWd_ue-j1rnPcw

Another handy link, thnx

Every fishing boat which could float seemed to be out the other night, in addition to the crazy trawlers we ran over some kind of floating net, very dim flashing red and green nearby, presumably the ends?a French and UK boat quite close by neither answered Vhf 16. Haven't come across that before. Wasn't very nice.

Listen out on Ch16 near the TSS that it the Straits of Gibraltar - fishermen pleading with fast moving ships to alter course and avoid their nets - absolutely amazing............
