Fishing boats for Asia

This may be a bit simplest but with the known over capacity in the European fishing fleets and the significant loss of fleets in Asia - does this situation not constitute a good fit?

Ideal opportunity for our Lord's & Masters to use our money. in a manner that would compensate our EU stuffed fisherman. Buying up the redundant vessels at a fair market price, and shipping out to Indonesia/Thailand et al. So logical and sensible, that it will never happen! Since when does one credit any Politicians with intelligence?

I did suggest this on an earlier thread but, subject to the vessels being suitable.

In many cases in South East Asia the fishing vessels work off the beach and not from a port. These are most likely to be the ones destroyed and so most northern European boats are unlikely to meet local requirements.

That does not mean that some may suit the needs out there and should be despatched post-haste.

As much of the timber and plywood we use comes from Asia it may make sense to fund local boatbuilding projects.

Give people work and purpose in the short term and food supply later.

Assuming, of course, that they still want to eat fish. I had heard that they don't, on the basis that the fish will have been eating their loved ones who were washed out to sea...

A boataid programme has been launched and supported by the RYA, CA and other luminaries. See this email from tha CA.

"To all CA Members

Please see an extract of an email from Ted Osborn of our RATS committee regarding any aid we might be able to give for those boaters who have suffered due to the recent Tsunami.

RYA, BMF and UK Fishing Federation have got together to work up a scheme for replacing fishing vessels lost through the recent tsunami in the Indian Ocean with surplus UK boats etc. When scheme finalised DSV, FFV and SKK likely to be asked to join in. Three sorts of vessels likely to be required: 15<25 ft open boats like Whitby cobles, typical UK inshore potting boats with cuddies and 30 ft+ all-weather boats with holds. Bigger vessels of the sort being decommissioned because of North Sea over-fishing, etc are thought not to be suitable. All will be surveyed professionally before acceptance.

Have said that CA is unlikely to be able to lay hands on suitable vessels but our email listing of members would no doubt be made available for publicity. I guess that delivery will be by ro-ro or one of the yacht-transport boats but have said we could well find some suitable delivery crews from retired members to assist if needed.

Needless to say, the Cruising Association will do its utmost to assist any coherent plan proposed to help , in particular, seafarer victims of the recent Tsunami disaster . The only good news is that , at the moment, we have no knowledge of any CA members or boats directly involved. It will be a miracle if things stay that way but lets hope .

When we have details we will circulate you all to see if you can assist on a personal level .
