No. it's not some new perversion. Just wanted to attract your attention.

We're heading up to Torridon for our annual jollies and plan to do some fishing for the pot. Being a bit conservation concious I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of a good fish identification web site cos' I would like to be able to tell the difference between male and female Cod so I can put back any hen fish.

Any ideas?

If you believe all you read in the papers apparently all fish are now hermaphrodite (is that the right word) because of all the chemicals pumped into the sea so you'll be hard pressed to tell. Bit like a heavy night in the late sixties/early seventies with all the long hair an all.

You're kidding. My colleagues in the Fisheries Directorate at Defra insist that there are only two cod left in the entire sea. If by some miracle you catch one of them and it's a girl cod, we'd better hope that the other one is a boy cod. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Don't worry about your one off fish for the table, the Gill netters and super Trawlers do all the damage, they kill everything.
 
imo - its ourselves who have killed the golden goose.

I have watched many a trawler discharge 'black fish' into lorries at night around europe, and have spoken to many an ex-fisherman driving taxis in a variety of (almost) defunct fishing ports .....

the black fish industry was greed + supply + demand

the gross overfishing in areas known to be under threat was 'quote' if I didnt catch em some other boat would'

that coupled with the danes stripping the sand eels from the north sea has eventually awarded us with the entirely predicted situation of the collapse in fish stocks

oh - and the debateable fact that temp rise in the n sea has driven our residential fish northward - perhaps

plus the indiscriminate use of beam trawlers sterilising breeding grounds ..............

so, I really dont think the odd trolling yottie is going to dent the already battered fishing industry - do you ?

If you do your fish in breadcrumbs, is that better?
 
Yes agree, breadcrumbs is the posh way, partic wholemeal ones. However oatmeal is excellent for fresh herring although a bit commmon do'nt you think? You can even get them ready done in Tescos nowadays!!!
 
I mainly eat trout I catch ...... poached in cider (and caught legally)

not thought of either breadcrumbing or battering them, let alone cooking them in porrige.

might ask tescos here if they do it in lava bread though - some of the natives seem to like that goo

my next project is to get a smoker and have a plentyful supply of smoked trout ....... just need more free time
 
Used to do a lot of flyfishing on Gala Water and the Tweed. Best brekkie is 4 small trout grilled with a knob of butter and a smattering of oatmeal .. yum yum. Mate of mine smoked them is a a home mader smoker made out of an old milk churn, worked well. I gave up smoking about 12 years ago though and feel a lot better for it, do'nt know if the old trout does though.
 
Regarding pair trawlers, thought that these have/ are about to be banned in the Western approaches where bass stocks have taken a pasting. On the back of loads of dolphins being killed as a by-product of their activities.
 
What about the purse seining that killed the herring industry. Now if we'd staying drift netting it would still be flourishing.
 
Regarding destruction of fish stocks, don't get me started. I'm rather hoping that we follow the model of our US and Canadian cousins where commercial net fishing has been banned in some areas, notably Florida. Result fish stocks up and the ex-fishermen now making very good living taking out charter anglers.

Regarding smokers, can recommend the ABU smoker, costs about £30, you'll find them in most tackle shops covered in dust 'cos we don't seem to use them in the UK. Have been using it for the last 5 years for smoking all sorts of things inc trout, mackerel, bass, eels and cheese.
 
about to be is as far as measures are likely to practically go currently.
whose boat, whose quota etc etc simply confuses the point.
the french are having discussions around the NBrittany box and there is much talk about the area south of Ireland but it's a long way from resolved!

right now the landed value of breeding stock bass sizewise is twice that of imature but sizable fish........so guess what will happen to stocks over the next 10 years? Commercial pressure is the only real driver.
