Having sold my previous boat with a garmin 80 fishfinder on board, I find I need to think about a another one for my newly acquired boat, really to keep an eye on the depth in Salcombe estuary (not the fish!). So in three years the models have changed, and prices, if anything, have dropped slightly. So what I want is a transom mounted transducer (I think?), and a low power usage unit, which can easily unclip so that it does not remain ready to be stolen. so any thoughts or recommendations?

We've got a Humminbird Pirana Max 20 on our upper helm station. They also do a Max 10 & Max 15 that have less pixels and less features but are cheaper.
You're welcome to have a look at it in Kingsbridge next week Sat. onwards. Send me a PM if you want to call by.

It cost approx. £90 from MES Ltd - who are excellent and sell other makes as well.

Yes, lots of choice now and good prices.
There was a good comparison article some months ago in PBO
I know that there are a lot of transom
mounted ones about but in my survey days we sometimes had problems with cavitation ( bubbles from prop interfering with signal)
I dont know if you can glass in the transducer and just connect the unit as required?
I think that I will look for one with the speed through water display as my paddle wheel log keeps getting encrusted. I like the good quality grey scale models as you seem to get an idea of bottom condition from them..
