I've been offered a the display unit of a fishfinder instrument without the transducer .Is a normal depth sounder transducer compatible or does the finder require something more complicated ?

Two best options would be try it and see, or email the respective manufacturers (although you'll probably just get marketing-speak).

Sorry, I didn't actually address the question in my post: fish finders generally require a dual frequency transducer - a narrow cone for depth and a wider cone for details at shallower depths. The Airmar P79 is dual frequency and will mate to most makes of fish finder.

Fish finders have power outputs, usually, at 300kw, 600kw and 1000kw. If your tranny is not big enough for the output you will damage it by blowing the diodes. Problem is, there is no way of knowing visually. Also the tranny may be dual frequency or not, but it won't damage it if wrong.

edit: that's watts, not Kw!
