I'm getting the raymarine C80 and can't decide whether or not I should get DSM300 Digital Sounder. I'm a total newbie so I don't know anything about transducers. Can anyone help with which transducer i should buy for my Bavaria sport 37? Do you think that i'm better off without a fish finder?
Thanks

no such thing as a fish finder, but have you any means of determining how deep the water is under your keel, if not then get the transducer to match the unit you are buying, you can have one to shoot through the hull, therefore no holes needed in the hull. All you have to do is find a sweet spot in the bilge that is solid glass, lightly sand it flat and stick it to the inner surface. best to be 2/3 rds back from the bow and in an area where the water flows smoothly. To find sweet spot put transducer in plastic bag add water and then try differing places, in the area suggested.

interesting answer,

I have the C120 and the fish finder and its great the tranducer come standard plastic or brass.

The DSM 300 works well you can see the outline of the bottom as you go along, it works by looking for air the air in the fish gulls is picked up however so are bubbles and some crap that floats about, but it is good, when your out, have the through hull transducer put in and wired through, you can also have a seperate display for depth connected via sea talk lead, all good stuff and works well.

one bit of advice turn the fish finder alarm off it will drive you mad.

These are fish, but the machine did not find them the seagulls did.

This is the return we get, with transducer stuck on the inner hull

Shheeesh, my litttle plasmo thingy has proper fish on the screen and weedy things on the bottom sometimes.

I would not have through hull if it can be avoided though. Theres quite enough holes in the hull, ready to sink you, without inventing more.

I think that the bavaria sport 37 comes with a depth finder. As i understood from the raymarine web site is that the through hull has a better performance but u don't have to drill holes for the in hull.
So is the in hull better for me?

Anything is better than holes through the hull.

But you have to spend some time finding a good place for the through hull ones. Find a good place and they work well.

Life boat only have porta potties to avoid as many through hull holes as possible.

Raymarine have recently introduced a DSM30 to go alongside their DSM300.
I believe that the new 30 is cheaper - you might like to check if it does anything for you.

On our last boat we had a DSM250 connected to the older RL70/RL80s and it seemed quite good at picking out underwater things - I'm not much good at fishing though so never caught any fish.

I'd say that you should get a better resuly than omega2's display.
