I have been considering a fishfinder as an (illustrated) depth indicator. However I note that many are rated at 800w +. Surely with my modest yacht and its single 12V battery would soon discharge at this consumption rate. Does anone have any comments.

I have a lowrance x51, here are the figs

Output power - 1200w (pp) 188w (rms).
Power Consumption 3.5W max.

this means a current of 0.29A, the uotput power you are refering to is the pulse power which as you can see is quite different, the 0.29A will also be with the backlight on, I do not know the figure with it off but I would imagine quite a difference.

I bought a Garmin 100 blue last year and found it very difficult to get the power consumption figures from any of the manufacturers. Does the figure they give include backlighting etc.?

I think most of th basic ones use less than half an amp, so as long as you use them selectively there should be no problem.

My outboard charges the battery but only very slowly so power consumption is always a consideration for me when on a week's holiday.

On the garmin there is a facility for dispalying the battery voltage on the screen and an alarm can be set to trigger if the voltage drops below a user defined level.
