The Director of Planning for Oban District has received an application to develop a shell fish farm site at the entrance to Loch Melfort.
Please contact be if you want the address to send your objection to.
Its right in the middle of the entrance to the Loch and would not only be as unsightly as the rest of them but would, I believe represent a real danger to navigation. I'm happy to attach a copy of the letter I've sent which outlines the principles on which my objection is based if you send me your email address
thanks

Gentlemen
Your concerns will be noted when the proposal is submitted to Scottish Executive
for Section 34 (works below high water mark) approval and to Crown Estates who also have a say in this. Part of the consultation process is a refferal to RYAS who are the consultees on every proposal affecting navigation. If the proposal is inappropriate RYAS will say so. The final word does not lie with the local authority. I sugest you write to RYAS with your objection, and have it on file
Regards

It appears there is another application in for a Shell Fish farm on the Solway Firth .. as reported here and also reporting Scotland here it is apparently one of the few safe anchorages (for small boats, yachts etc) on the Solway Firth

I object to gratuitous objections, which I find objectionable.

Shellfish farming is about as environmentally friendly as it's possible to get and they tend to be owned and run by local people, putting real money into the local community, all of which suggests to me that they should be encouraged.

OK, you might not like the look of the lines of floats or whatever, but all you have to do is look the other way for a couple of minutes as you steam past.

If the proposals really do present a hazard to navigation then the MCA will not let it happen. Otherwise don't be so selfish. The shellfish farm will only use a tiny little bit of the sea - there's plenty out there for the rest of you to go sailing in.

"The shellfish farm will only use a tiny little bit of the sea - there's plenty out there for the rest of you to go sailing in." I would agree with that but when we want to stop sailing for a few hours overnight are all the anchorages going to be full of farms? Farms have the same shelter requirements as us.

I understand your concern in this respect but generally people want to anchor in places that are a good bit shallower than is required for either fin fish or mussel farms. Around the coast of Skye there is not a single farm site that was ever a habitual anchorage. In some cases they are adjacent but it is still possible to anchor.

You're right, I have no knowledge of the particular site at Loch Melfort and the applicant may be chancing his arm in terms of navigation hazard, in which case I'd support your objection.

More generally, what I've said is neither uninformed nor claptrap and it'll be fenders at dawn on the foredeck (first one to knock the other into the loch gets his way) unless you retract.

Claptrap

Wot exactly is claptrap, the expression must have originated from somewhere.

Oooh I do like a fight first thing in the morning, livens up the whole day. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Can I?

Thought fenders were a bit 'girly'. Make sure its a handbag with sharp corners.... and long handles - trust me I've taken many a battering.

Retraction accepted.

I'm off to cook some nice farmed mussels for her dinner.
