Twister_Ken's post on identifying a bird reminded me that I had meant to post this fish database some time ago.

If you are a fisherman, or just interested in the fish around you, you might enjoy Fishbase.

It is not obvious from first looking at it but there are more photo's of the fish as well under the family part.

Thank you so so so much. You have made my day!

I dont know what I like more, the "View Fish at Depth" feature (with a lamp!!) or the fish forum. Totally excellent.

I never knew there were so many types of Chub.

Thank you! Stunning, monster database site. Much recommended.

Glad you like it. Have almost been tempted to buy the CD's just to keep on the boat (can get to about them from the Home page), but they are pretty expensive.

As an example of its completeness it covers all the remote corners of the world in detail. For example, my wife was born in the very little Pacific island country of Tuvalu, and the site lists with photos and details a whole fleet of fish, both common and rare, from there. For here in NZ, it lists little known species which I have never seen in any paper reference before, let alone in the flesh.

For shark fans, a recreational fisherman caught a 5.5 m female Great White by accident in a net here yesterday. It had drowned but they could see that it had pups wriggling inside it and delivered them by caesarian section - there were 3 of which 2 were alive and released.

Regards

John
