Hi

I'm very seriously considering selling my White Plastic Motor Boat (!) and buying something with some character..

So far two very different boats have caught my eye..

and <A target="_blank" HREF=http://ybw.yachtworld.com/core/uk/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?currency=GBP&units=Feet&checked_boats=1124544&&ybw=true>this one

I would be interested in any comments, either off the cuff or considered, regarding either of them.

I realise that they are both fairly cheap, which may suggest inherent problems, however the sale of my MoBo should leave sufficient funds to deal with most problems.

Thanks

Well, they are certainly different!

One is a sailing boat's sailing boat, and the other is a motor boat with sails.

The A&R 30-square is a classic racing yacht hull, converted to a cruiser. On the basis of my own experience, years ago, with something similar, I would expect her to sail like the clappers but to be very wet going to windward, since she will sail through stuff rather than over it, and she may be structurally "interesting".

The Ernie Nunn Haven Class is an old style motor sailer - don't expect her to go anywhere without the engine, and the rig is really for steadying purposes. A comfortable old box. She is the one that I would go for, if coming to wooden boat ownership from owning a GRP motor boat.

Hi Mirelle

Thanks for that - one of my reasons for changing from the MoBo is that I want to start sailing again (haven't sailed since my teens) so perhaps the Haven Class won't be suitable!

Can you elaborate on the 'structurally interesting' comment regarding the A&R?

Thanks again..

All I meant was that Thirty Squares are lightly built boats with long ends which are prone to pounding going to windward because of their U shaped hull sections. You will also notice the counter slamming at anchor. This is a highly stressed hull form. The rig conversion will have reduced the rig stresses on the hull, but the form stresses under way remain.

I could not possibly comment on the structural condition of this, or any, boat, without a good look at her, but from the photos the conversion seems to have been done by people who knew what they were about.

I agree with Tillergirl. It is not something to be rushed, rather enjoyed.

Firstly, I would sell your motor boat and see the funds clear before mentally committing to a sailboat. I would spend the ensuing time of selling the MB to narrow down what I am looking for, and then go for something closer to a hybrid than a one-design racer. I would also insist on a trial sail, to satisfy myself that the joy of sailing I experienced in my teens hasn't been too seriously modified by the, shall we say, more feather-bedded life of a motor-boater. Something like a Colvic motor-sailer might suit your advancing years. I qualify that statement by just having come back from a weekend's boisterous sailing and found myself more black-and-blue than I did as a keen teen.

Good luck with the project

Thanks to all for your comments and advice - all well received - apart from this business about 'advancing years'! I'm naught but a slip of a lad!
