At last we took the plunge and brought the boat down to Gibraltar where she will overwinter at La Linea. Feeling a little out of my comfort zone on the maintenance issues not knowing who to trust etc but we will get there and get used to the challenges that changing our cruising area every year will bring.

My first winter question is whether or not I will need a dehumidifier to run over the winter as I used to in the UK?

Any suggestions/observations welcome. Thanks in advance

Alan

Think you may have a bit of difficulty getting into and out of Gibraltar this winter . . . . .

If you're living aboard, probably not. That isn't to say it doesn't get cool and damp in Gib, but your normal coming and going, plus a bit of deliberate ventilation, will probably mean it won't get too soggy. Obviously much will depend of the type of heating you have, and how much you use a gas stove. On the whole you'll find that any form of dry heating (such as oil-filled rad), will keep the humidity manageable. In six winters aboard in the Med and Spain I've never felt the need for a dehumidifier and, whilst I don't go around routinely quizzing others on the subject, never knowingly met anyone else who has.

Enjoy your first winter.

We have spent a couple of winters in Gibraltar and did not have a real problem with condensation however it can get a bit damp in January/February. You can easily pick one up in the town if you feel you need it.

You wont have any problem with the border if you walk, most of the people who work in Gibraltar live in Spain and walk across every day with no queues, its the cars they are causing chaos with

Have spent many winters in Gib. Wouldn't be without a dehumidifier.

As ST says, border no problem on foot.

Thanks all for comments

Have you ever actually spent a winter in Gibraltar/La Linea?

I know Capnsensible lives in Gib and therefore will take his tip and get a dehumidifier - thanks for everyone's comments.

By the way - last in La Linea 2 weeks ago and crossing into Gib was no problem on foot. Different story by car. The marina people in Alcadeisa seemed delighted to welcome a new berth holder there "despite" (?) the Red ensign. Got the distinct impression there that the Spanish were seeing this sabre rattling for what it was and would rather get on with their lives than get caught up in some Madrid based peeing match.....
