Just completed our first, admittedly short, sea voyage in Crystal - this photograph has served to convince some that we rather pushed our luck for novices...

...but the truth is almost stranger. Quite taken aback to be clipping along at a fair pace, only to be overtaken by the East Goodwin lightship, not a vessel usually known for her turn of speed.

It seems she's off somewhere after sitting at Ipswich Docks for a bit. Anyone know where? Presumably she's not going back to sea?

Where was your voyage to/from? Tell more. And how 'novice' are you?

Beautiful boat, by the way (Crystal that is, not the light ship, though I suppose that does have a certain tank-like charm...)

I'm afraid it was most unauspicious - it involved crossing the Deben bar and crossing the Harwich shipping channel before whizzing up to Ipswich. We didn't sail at sea (it was just a bit too blowy), and ran out of diesel on the Orwell just in time to attempt to sail onto a pontoon using jib and mizzen.

It almost worked!

Crystal's owners are myself (25) and Jen (24), I with quite a bit of Broads sailing experience, but not much at sea, and none as skipper at sea, and Jen a complete novice but learning very quickly. On this voyage, Jen had to do something peculiar called "werk" or "work" (???), so I took Steve (29), another novice and an extremely quick learner. All went well, if not as planned, and a good, if utterly icy, time had by all. Pictures up soon for those who are interested.

Cheers,

The east goodwin is appartly being changed over according to the rya web site in the crusing notice to mariers section as of 6th jan this year, probebly after some genral maintiance on the old girl for a couple of months. So what you saw was her being towed back to her position.
Incidentially many of the lightships have a nearly identical sister for when they are in port does anyone know weather this is also the case here?
Ps know as in the case of the sevenstones that most of the insides are filled with foam to render her unsinkable!
