Well the first service for my boat was done yesterday.

Tell me what you think of the Cost, Good or Bad??

Boat out, Service Engine and Leg, Boat back In..

Total bill including Vat.....£80.

A lot of people have been telling me to expect the bill to be between £200-£300, Cause its 'MARINE', So i am quite happy.

Cheers...

Alistair...

That's cheaper than the cost of a first service on some of the cars that we supply! /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Sorry Alistair, but your story's harder to believe than the monster coming to Lomond for its hols.

Surely your a factor of 10 out, or £80 was just the VAT!

If its your 20 hour mercruiser service after run in then all they do is change the oil for the leg so hence only £80!

Juss wait until you have a full service, now way will it be under £200 or even praps £300.

<hr width=100% size=1>...but then I would say that wouldn't I.....

Yes, Its first service (20hr).
Change Engine oil,
Oil Filter
Fuel Filter.
Leg Oil.
And something about an air Filter, Although i didn't think boats had them.

Its amazing these new MPI, engines, They connected there computer to it and could tell me exactly what Rpm i had been doing and how many hours were on the clock when i was doing it, if it had been over revved, they say i've revved it too 4850rpm which is fine, the limit i think they said was 5500rpm. They could tell roughly the speeds it had done and what fuel consuption was like.

Technology great when it works , But i'm srcrewed if it goes wrong!!!/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Strangely, my (Alpha) service schedule states engine oil change after 50 hours, and leg oil only after first 100 hours (or yearly).

I might change the engine oil sooner, e.g. 40 hours. But I need the boat out to do the leg oil, so I'll time that to suit, although no longer than 100 hours of course.

But it does seem a bit puzzling, are all Alpha drives 100 hours and Bravo 20 hours?

BTW, can the electronics tell what you were drinking at 4850 rpm as well!?

that's the regular service intervals, the run in service for warranty is after 20hours for all the merc stuff.

Re: Gimble

something is "gimbled" if its attutude stays flat when the motion of the sea wd otherwise tip it - examples are cookers in sailing boats, and some (very few) clever radar which is gimballed, again on sailboats. Not sure there is a thing called a "gimbal".

The 'Gimble' is the mechanism that allows the leg to move both 'left/right' in the steering mode, and 'up/down' in the trim/tilt mode.

Youn get similar devices, usually on raggiemobiles, to keep the stove level whilst the boat is rocking all over the place.

The alignment of the leg is important, not only when doing the highland fling.

Since the engine has to run on flexible mounts, it cannot be joined to the transom/leg jobby by firm hard solid connections. In fact it's no joined at all, and the engine and leg just 'look at each other' keeping a safe distance.

However, they must look at each other, fair and square in the eye, or the drive shaft linking the two will be trying to do an impression of a banana, your Glenlivet will be shaken not stirred, and Barrus shares will be bucking the stock market trend.

Since the flexible engine mounts, may 'settle-in' after a few hours, and the transom leg mount may swivle a bit if the bolts weren't troqued to properly, it is possible that the alignment could deteriorate after use.

More likely they'll just be correcting a bad installation and a non-existant PDI!

Just decided I better order some filters etc. if I need to do a service quicker than 50 hours.

Oil filter not too bad at £12 ish.

Thought I better get a spare serpentine belt while I'm at it (all this talk of Maydays and power loss on other posts got me thinking!) - Not too bad at £22 ish.

The only other worthwhile spare to carry on board that I could think of was a fuel filter. They're over fifty quid!! Now that is bad, why?

Since the engine's based upon the Astra 1.7D, I guess it's wishful thinking (excuse my boat name pun), to think they fit the same fuel filters in the cars?

I guess you are probably right, 'wishful thinking', i very much doubt it.

I asked the Service dealer what spares i should be carrying on the boat with me, he said there was nothing i could carry apart from spare props, and that was pointless when i was using stainless steel!!

What spares does the panel think i should carry??

Seastart membership is very useful in Loch Lomond!!!!

I was told theres no point carry spark plugs as near impossible to get into them without stripping somethings off.

Will poss. start to carry spare fuel filter, Do you need to turn the fuel off B/4 changing it??
