Hi Guys

Ive jsut got back from my first adventure in my boat.I left wells harbour on saturday mornings tide,it was blowing around the 3-4 mark from the SW,it was a lively sail i was with another novice and beween the both of us we managed it.The best speed that we hit was 8.4 knots sog under sail,we beached the boat at Sea Palling on sat afternoon before having a barbie, after that we floated her off and dropped anchor behind the sea defenses,i managed to bed the anchor in,then i knocked the new deck broom overboard so i had to heavy the thing back up and go chasing it.

We left sea Palling at 6.30 Am,the wind dropped so i cranked up the engine and managed to hit 17knots before throttling back to a more sedate and less fuel consuming 8kn

we got back to wells safely and in one piece,i cant wait to go out again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Congratulations, you've done something none of us have ever done before (or was there one?). I take it you have the 50hp outboard!

Where are you off to next? I look forward to hearing how you find Brancaster and Blakeney.

At that speed there's no way I'll keep up with you, do you carry a tow rope ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Looking forward to joining you soon over at Wells

thank you chaps, i have the yamaha big foot 50hp,the downside of it is the fuel consumption at 17kn,it drinks it.On the other hand it helps you get to your destination on time, especially usefull for the tidal situation at wells.

I shall be down modifying the boat for single handed sailing this coming weekend,so a short hop into Brancaster or Blakeney is definately a strong possibility.

I also want to experiment with motor sailing, one chap that i know managed to motorsail to the bahamas at 8-10kn using only 2 liters of fuel per hour, again this is all down to wind etc,im told that at 6kn on the engine alone she will do about 6to 7 Mpg

I learned a lot about sail handling this weekend,it was very enjoyable.

yes neil i think that a trip down to the orwell is in Line,is there a decent sized slipway at your marina?

i can always sail down and trailer her back, unless the wife is wanting to come along

Nope... no slipway here.... but there are numerous slipways in the Orwell area... a good alternative would be Titchmarsh just 2 or 3nm away.... I don't know too much detail about others, as I don't really have any use for one!... but there are loads of good folk on here who will be able to tell all....

The easiest Slip way to get to is at Suffolk Yacht Harbour.
Access from the A14 / A12 Junction east of Ipswich.
The slip is steep but it is between steel sheet piles and is very sheltered.
It can be used at nearly any state of the tide.
LW springs could be difficult.
SYH is on the Orwell and you can get out at any state of the tide.
We are 25' and 2 tonne.
We launch there with a Range Rover.
The cost this year was about £21.

The other slip we have used is at Robinson's boatyard in Woodbridge.
The access is very twisty and difficult if someone has parked in the wrong place.
The slip is less steep and had a quay on one side.
You can only use the slip about 2 hrs each side of high water.
The whole area drys at low water.
The cost is £15.
