im so pleased with myself i thought id post about it.I left wells and headed to Sherringham, this is my first season so its all a big learning curve,i was mainly sailing in a beam reach but the wind swung a bit so i ended up sailing gull winged,i found it difficult but not impossible to control the boat, any how i turned around and after 4 tacks into the wind,i gave up due to time restraints and fired up the engine,i had also managed to shred my jib.I arrived at the anchorage outside wells at around 20.00,dropped the hook and cooked dinner,i got my head down as acess was going to be 01.15am at the earliest,i got woken at midnight by some violent movements mainly down to wind picking up and tide shifting direction.

i had a look around and soon realised as to how easy it is to become disoriented at night,i gave my self some time to wake up and get my bearings, there was no one around so i fired up the engine,i stuffed 4 flares and my VHF into my jacket,if i was going to go overboard, the world would know about it.I put the engine into gear and retrieved the anchor, just as i got it in board i saw the shape of a large port hand boy coming upon me fast,i got into the cockpit and took control, the tide was pushing me all over the place,it was a bit concerning and it gets very lumpy at the entrance

My first night entry (solo) was a learning curve, judging diistance and my speed was difficult, once in the harbour i had to pick out my mooring and route around the bars,i moored up sucessfully

i sat in the cockpit looking up at the stars and out at the first sniff of daylight feeling a bit smug with myself

i know that you old sea dogs have done this lots of times but this was my first crack at it.

Really great stuff,
its not easy to convey the uneasiness with new experiences and how you cope with them.
It'll make it 10% easier every time until you get so confident you give yourself a fright with an unforced error.

Keep it up, sounds like you are having a grand season.

Wonderful stuff. I have been into Wells once during night hours and wouldn't have chosen it for my first entry, night or day so good on you. I also saw it dried out after I was in and still wonder how come it was only twice that I ran aground on the way in. Its a great place, one of my favourites.

Nice one Matt, as you know I'm a tad behind you on the learning curve but thankfully I've gained a few night hours so know how wierd the whole experience can be. Sounds like you had a good weekend, well done. Better than we managed. Eight hours aboard today, and managed a grand total of 0.8 miles.

ive grounded a couple of times, you really do have to stick to the channel.I keep breaking shear pins on my dinghy outboard, ive gotten through 3 so far.

The whole thing was a real confidence booster
