WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST? I hope to get my first boat next year. Looking to pay less than £10K but want something that is robust enough to sail single handed from North Wales up the west coast of Scotland, over to the Isle of Mann, and Ireland.

Have a look at the Albin Vega, around 10K (a lot less for a petrol one), I singlehand of the west coast of Ireland - she's never given me a monents concern. A good sea boat and there's a very active owners group.

Cutlass 27 is a very similar boat to the Albin - like a bigger Folkboat.

We've sailed between North Wales and Whitehaven over the last 5 years and have been very happy (apart from the lack of space inside and the fact that it never goes astern under power in the same direction twice! No complaints whatsoever about the seakeeping qualities though!

Stop telling everyone about the Vega, George - they'll all want one. . .

When are you going to get Vista's website together?

If you are not physically too big save yourself a lot of money and get yourself a Corribee. It's a proper little yacht, sails superbly and will go safely anywhere that larger boats will go. I cruised one all over the Western Isles in all sorts of conditions and only changed it for a larger boat because I got too fat and my good lady wife wanted a proper toilet compartment. Corribees (preferably the fin keel) go from £3000 upwards and you can even get one with an inboard diesel for about £5000. Web site www. corribee.org.uk

Another option is the Halcyon 27, Folkboat or the Jaguar 27 - all will OK for your purpose, although the Folkboat is a bit cramped below.

I'd rather be sailing... :)

All good suggestions
25-26 foor range offers a few more sugggestions
Hunter Delta, Sadler and Westerly Centaur are all within or really a bit below your price range.
