After a very long search I have eventually managed to buy my first proper boat, its a phantom 38 with Cat 3116's 355hp.Photos to follow as soon as my son shows me how to use photo shop. To be honest I would have preferred
Volvo 63's but I think the fact it was a bit unusual brought it into my price range. Have to say massive thank you Volvo Paul for his endless advice and help during the search- sorry about the cats Paul !
We are keeping it at Mayflower marina in Plymouth ,so Ancasta kindly came with me on the first trip in glorious sunshine from Dartmouth, which was a magical first outing in the best weather so far this year.
Since then we have ventured up the Yealm for lunch at the ship and spent the begging of this week in Salcombe.
We have loved it so far but we have not managed to avoid all the problems I have been well warned of by reading this forum for the last couple of years. Sooooo many questions !!
The boat has been used very little especially in the last 18 months and only has a total of 256 hours on the engines of a 1999 boat. When coming back from Salcombe the starboard engine went up to just over 95 oC while the port engine stayed at 85 oC but the minute I came off the plane it dropped back to 85 which a couple of people have advised suggests it is more likely a raw water problem, and the guys who did the engine survey don't think it's anything too serious most probably due to being inactive for 18 months and just needs flushing or a new thermostat .Does anybody have an views on this who maybe have catapillar engines or experience with Cat engines ?
Secondly I have had problems working out the Eberspacher controls, engine fans and rear bilge pump won't seem to come on when switched manually and there is about 6 inches of water in the bilges at the front of the engines.
Does anyone know where I can get a manual for both the engines and the boat itself ?
Anyway it hasn't put us off at all and a big thank you for any advise anyone may have
