I'm putting together a 'kit of bits' for a trip where we will frequently be a week or more distant from pro medical interventions, for quite lengthy periods. I've packed the lozenges and plasters, the triangular bandages, the sphygmomanometer and the flat-pack zimmer frame. There are several 70cl containers of Old Pulteney, for oral hygiene issues. I have a ready supply of safety pins, and have done the 'One-week sewing up of chicken wings' course.....

What other useful medicaments might I have sound cause to appreciate having with us on board? Seriously, now, folks. I've only a few days to get this sorted out.

For serious and impartial advice re a proper sea-going First Aid Kit, consult ultramarini (Marie) on this Forum - she is a fully qualified First Aid Instructor, and regularly runs First Aid courses for various sailing schools around the Solent.

For serious advice about all the different alcoholic remedies to be taken internally, ultramarini could possibly advise on this as well, although I am sure there is extensive knowledge on this Forum re what is the best assortment of potions to keep in the drinks locker (oops, sorry, first aid cabinet). /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

PS - As suggested by Wally below, if you have a copy of the Ship Captain's Medical Guide (22nd edition) you should be covered for just about every eventuality - here is a link : http://www.bluewaterweb.com/NauticalBooks/Book.asp?SKU=0115516581&TopicID=72

A copy of "The Ship's Doctor" or an equivalent. You'll never need most of it but, since one never knows what one will encounter, it's good to know that the answer lies between those covers.

Having said that, I wish that you'll never need to use it! Good luck and enjoy yourselves!

Something such as dio-calm (or stronger) to stop the runs, and something like ex-lax or a duff oyster to start it up again if seized.

I think that covers it.

Bottle & can openers? Plastic bags for shopping trips to get more medical supplies. Tinnies for additional ballast in bilges. FB pies for staunching severe cuts, plugging breaches in the hull or for use as Radar reflectors in foggy weather. I reckon the list is endless, but I'm bored now.

Bicarbonate of Soda.
Useful for so many things. Indigestion, stings, bites, rashes, cleaning metalwork etc.etc.
Don't buy it from a chemist, go to a catering wholesaler and get a great big jar for a couple of quid.

Someone's just told me to remember the Marigolds.....

....I'm sure that wasn't on the 'MCA Ships Captain's Medical Training Course'!

ps Thanks for the several helpful pointers. I've logged 'em, will implement 'em - and any more will be hoisted in.

I'm still looking for a good hangover cure ( have been for decades! )
