Fireproofing

As part of the BSS I need to ensure that all inflammable materials are insulated from my cooker (little gas 2-ring). I take this to mean the cabin walls and roof. There's some white 'Artex'y stuff on the roof right now but I haven't tried setting fire to it.

I've seen pictures of a boat with metal sheeting, I've thought about sticking a fire blanket around and I was in a sauna the other day that had sheets of 'asbestos'y stuff protecting the walls from the coals. Maybe there's some magic gunk I can spray everything with.

What's the best thing to do?

p.s. Please don't start posting stuff that goes off at a tangent (e.g. flags) 'cos my little heart sinks when all my new internet friends start sqabbling in my thread.
 
Only the area immediately around the cooker needs protecting and some aluminium sheeting would be the easiest way to do it. You certainly dont need to start worrying about deckheads etc. My Vanessa 2rings plus oven unit sits in a purpose built cavity which is lined both sides and back to just above the level of the burners. If you'd like a pic let me know aand I'll email one.

Sorry about the flags bit - my fault I suppose but they all want to jump on my canoe!

"Worrying about deckheads" - wassat? the roof? I guess there's only about 2'6" clearance between the rings and the roof. If I flambe my Xmas pud there's a chance I'd scorch my deckhead (ouch!).
 
I'd have thought that if a fire blanket is of use for a deckhead fire - your would be inverted and therefore have bigger problems to deal with?

Now listen very carefully.....I will only say this once........
The fire blanket gets thrown over the xmas pud so that the flames get put out BEFORE they set light to the deckhead (sorry..roof). If your're so p*ss*d that you dont notice before the deckhead (sorry...roof) is alight chances are things have got seriously out of hand. Maybe there should be something in the BSS - "THou shalt not flambe Xmas Pud"

However..........at least you'll all have your flags to wave to attract attention!

"If my misses/bird/bit of fluff flambe my Xmas pud there's a chance she'll scorch my deckhead (ouch!)."

Yes, I was wondering about the curtains (mine are near the galley). Should be able to get fireproofing squirt from B&Q or some such outlet I guess.

I see from the MBM that dropped on doorstep this morning, that a boat on the Thames blew up recently. This had a new BSS certificate issued in July this year, the boat was also diesel powered and was owned by UTMYC member, so was presumably reasonably well looked after.
No reason for the fire was given yet, but presumably all the best intentions of the BSS failed on this example, I would make your own risk assessment and not simply try to achieve what is required to satisfy the examiner.
Common sense should prevail, its your life after all.

A lucky escape for all concerned, fortunate to happen on the river in company and not miles out at sea.

If it was a fuel line, I wonder if it had been modified to pass the BSS, a fuel spill rail perhaps?

I'll stick to my nice safe petrol boat for now!

Would Soltron have prevented this? Anyone? Does the 13 % absorbed water make the fuel less explosive? Self extinguishing, perhaps?

If you inject water into petrol vapour it results in a more efficient burn, not sure what it does to diesel.
You could try emptying your extinguishers into the fuel in advance, Halon would be best, maybe a slight power loss though.

Unfair, referee. We had a comms room stage one fire/smoke alarm this morning so I hit the crash stop. Whoops only testing said the network manager!

Sits Vac - Required one network manager, central London.
