Not quite so simple.
I'm told that some RNLI cox or mechanics get paid a retainer and this happens more than you might think. The rest of the crew seem to come from the community for free.
In many of the small coastal communities the Fire Brigades are also part-time and paid a pitance
In small communities the laudable ethic of service is alive and well in both trades and everyone in the village or town respects what these people do.
That's whats been lost in the larger towns & cities, the status, and firemen sit about for ages then go and pull some ungrateful tosser, with the IQ of a chimp, out of his BMW. So when the seductive call of "come out on strike and double your money" is heard its a fertile ground.
