Simple question If Halatron is a replacement for Halon why cant I get
my Halon extinguishers refilled with the new substance and with a sticker
on it giving details of the filling etc. Surely it could be cheaper.

hi derek, looking at your profile this could be suck eggs time, but i think the operation and storage pressures are quite different. i'm sure that the Co2 propelant in the halatron will be stored at around 51 Bar, with the old halon unit being much lower. i'm finding out so watch this space.

what i do know is that it's not sufficient to just change the sticker, as all extinguishers now have to be red, with the only concession to the old B.S. colour coding being a band not more than % of the surface area to help denote the contents.

when i find out i'll PM you, and if you want to share the info here you can. i still think that having a Co2, Dry powder, and foam on board will allow you a good first attack onboard. Halon although great at extinguishing the fire, won't stop it reigniting, and you'll quickly be overcome by the fumes especially if in an enclosed space.

hope this helps, steve.

Thanks, Steve ,I understand the difference now. Great to get expert advice.
I had seen that one extinguisher manufacturer was offering a 25% discount on their new units if you returned your old Halon units. This made me think -extra work at a reduced price-smells of rip-off to me. over priced extinguishers.
I have three 3 kg powder units and two 1.5 kg halon units on board but must now get rid of the later which are still servicable. The replacements seem very expensive.
Thanks.Derek.

You don't have to get rid of you Halon until the end of this year. After that, they become illegal - but I'll bet many people keep them for their own safety. And I would not blame them.

The ozone layer will not get any more depleted while the gas is inside the extinguisher, but if the boat catches fire, far more dangerous gases will be emitted from the burning boat - but the Halon may well save a life.

Banning Halon was a knee-jerk reaction from released CFC's from fridges and the like. No account was taken in the fire-fighting side of it. Strangely enough, one of the biggest polluters - the airlines - I believe, are allowed to keep their Halon systems. As well as, again, from what I have heard, the RN.

this company has been selling the halatron kit for a few years and replied with the following.

"one cannot replace one chemical with
a different chemical in the same container especially when UL tested.
Doesn't make any difference on the chemical properties, Halotron I
cannot be replaced for Halon 1211 period. Best contact a local fire
suppression company in the UK or contact Badger Fire Protection whom is
a manufacturer of fire extinguishers for further information.. The
United States has different guidelines than the UK.

hope it helps, steve.
Very Truly yours,"
