I noticed that all our fire extinguishers on Serendipity are out of date so I thought I'd have a quick look around for some new ones.

Now I can buy 2kg powder ones from here at £14.39 with free delivery http://simplyextinguishers.co.uk/powerx-2kg-powder-extinguisher.html

Or I could buy half that size 1kg powder ones (in exactly the same make) for £22.99 +£3.99 delivery = £26.98 from here http://www.mailspeedmarine.com/fire-gas-safety/fireblitz/re-fillable-abc-powder-extinguisher-5976-598567.bhtml

Hmm - I wonder which one I will go for.

Actually, I appreciate that Chandlers need to make a profit - but the Simply Extinguishers web site has some good deals (no connection) and we have bought from there before. (Thatched cottages have to have fire extinguishers in them according to the insurance company...)

No, don't get dry powder...

Please do a search of recent posts on fire extinguishers. I have experienced dry powder and I think they should be banned. Get AFFF.

When you say "out of date" is that service interval or Warranty.

What is the service interval in the UK, here in RSA it is 12 months with 5 year extended i.e. pressure test extinguisher tank

Have you checked the price of service.

At the price on that web site it may be cheaper to replace.

It's 'What the market will bear'.

In your case it obviously won't! But most people, leading busy lives, will opt for what is most easily available.

I have not worded that too well, and I am not suggesting for one moment that you don't lead a busy life, but I am thinking that you might be like the wretched (but blessed) Reverend Quiverful, existing on a miserly stipend and with every incentive to hunt down the best deal you can. :D

Yep agree. Just replaced mine inc the engine rooms auto. Massive difference in prices for the same item(s). Some chandleries are double the cost of FE specialists - same with many other things like Life-jacket service kits for instance. Bit of googling can save a fortune.

Those are some seriously competitive prices, have been looking at a 2kg FE (halon replacement) for the engine bay, about £60 cheaper than the cheapest chandlery.

Thanks for the link:)

I am the very fortunate position of not having to survive on a C of E stipend... Doesn't mean that I want to throw money away though. The fire extinguisher price search took less than 30 seconds. Mind you I am still off work having come out of hospital ten days ago so some time on my hands.

My supplier of choice is Lidl, who supply 2 kilo units with pressure gauges .

When a neighboring boat caught fire they worked well. Agreed the powder goes everywhere, but better than a major fire. I think they were £9.99 each

After watching the disaster boat vids, I have replaced my internal powder with AFFF .

Your suppliers have some pretty good prices on AFFF.

The problem with foam is before you start any firefighting you need to have enough of it to actually put the fire out and supress it (it breaks down) until it is fully estinguished. Dry power forms a crust, and therefore can keep a fire form re-igniting. Dry power is a better media but is messier. Just my thoughts.....

Cheers

Just looking through John's suppliers website, this one looks pretty good;

http://simplyextinguishers.co.uk/firemax-2-litre-abf-foam-extinguisher.html

That particular one is suitable for fat fires (F-) class, ordinary ones for all other uses are about a tenner cheaper - from the same site.

The foam variety are considerably bigger than the powder ones - of which I was unaware until I asked my BSS examiner, but I don't suppose you "proper boaters" are worried about that.

These are the people I used when I replaced my powder ones with AFFF ones, reasonably priced and quick delivery. http://www.firemart.co.uk/webshop/1ltr-foam-fire-extinguisher?cPath=72_95_98

I replaced the powder ones when I saw what a mess they make after a small fire at a friends house. They were finding powder for days afterwards. I also used the 'Halon Replacement type' for the auto extinguisher in the engine bay.
