It is time to replace my engine bay fire extinguisher which is a firepro aerosol system which is coming to the end of its 15 year service life. I noticed stat-x is also available, does anyone know how they compare?

Also can anyone provide a supplier details for firepro as my current supplier has change to stat-x.

Lastly should I consider an alternative, been a while since I've looked at the options.

My system has also come to the end of it's life and so we have to replace ours. The local (Core d'Azur) guy to us has recommended a Sea Fire system based on FM200 gas. Retail around €2500, but he has a reconditioned system he has offered with guarantee for less than half of that.

Looking into new systems what became apparent was the difference between what you could have (dry power) what you should have (inert gas). The risk of accidental discharge of a dry powered system and the damage it could cause if ingested into a running engine certainly pointed me to a inert gas replacement.

This website has been useful in my research - http://www.safety-marine.co.uk/fire...ea-fire-fm200-automatic-fire-extinguisher.htm

Thanks guys and added those options to my list to look at in more detail.

There must be others out there with FirePro or Stat-x systems, anyone know of a good supplier or what they think of Stat-X etc.

Thanks.

Installed firetrace https://www.firetrace.co.uk onboard.... reconditioned pressure container, new piping... very reasonable, easy to install and having had the pressure container checked and re-filled recently, I cannot complain about service or cost of service ...

What a happy coincidence. I was visiting this forum to ask for advice on an engine bay fire suppressing system (it's for a classic car rather than my boat, but the principle's the same) and found my question answered before I asked it! Many thanks - I have emailed Firetrace to ask for a quote.

Still considering my options, what is the service life FM200? Comparing this with stat-x which is 10 years before replacement with an annual inspection. Also does anyone know where to find fm200 cylinder weights?

Thanks.

Just had my Sea-fire FD750 FM200 serviced in the UK at ten years old. Included a pressure test of the cylinder, there was no explicit charge for gas so maybe it's only lost gas that's new. I assume it's a long life gas. They said see you in ten years for the next major service. Just visual & weighing annually.

I was told the old gas is recovered & sent back to the US by the French agent.

I don't know the actual weight but it's certainly not light. My engine room is a reasonable size and I wouldn't lift a larger extinguisher than this by myself. My guess is it's a 110Ah Battery weight.

Thanks for the info, but are you sure it weighs similar to a 110ah battery, that does seem quite heavy.

Just weighed it and is 25.6kg including cardboard box and internal padding.

This is a FD750M and the cost for the service was £275.18 including the Hydrostatic test which interestingly they sub out to Ocean Safety.

Hope that helps, Paul
