Fire extiguisher dates

Heres one for you

I have three types of extiguisher on my boat, and none have an actual expire date. I think one has a date on it, but its just a date, nothing more.

All my bottles have the little gauge so i can maually check them, i also weigh them to cofirm they are ok.

But if going abroad and you get stopped like mentioned in a previous thread. And they check extiguisher dates. would you still get fined without a date on them? and if you check them yourselfs with proof that you have recorded the weight and what the gauge reads?

It also more worrying that when you buy an extiguisher online they dont give you these supposed expire dates. heres a link to one, you tell me where the expire date is mentioned?

Nothing against tcs by the way, i use them alot.

But im just trying to get around all this expire date that foreign officials want to see.

remember to shake the extinguishers from time to time, to prevent the powder from settling and consolidating. Otherwise, yes, assuming the gauge has not stuck, you should be fine.

I would not be fine in foregin waters.

As a health and safety + fire rep onboard the ships i work on, i have no doubt my ones are fine. But its proving this to the authoroties.

Lots of numbers on the one I have at home but nothing is obviously an expiry date. ( It has gas pressure gauge)

What do you do on board ship.

My industrial experience is that they are inspected, gas cartridges weighed where applicable, weight recorded and extinguisher labelled with date(s) of inspection(s). Done by in house fire-fighter where applicable otherwise outside contractor.

On the ships we have a monthly check of all extiguishers which include dry powder, co2, afff, a 90l afff, and a special chemical one for the deep fat fryers in the galley.

I have never dealt with the chemical one so i cant comment but we weighe the co2s and check the gauges on the others.

I think, off the top of my head, its then every two years the extiguishers get sent back to chubb for a recharge, but as we cant be without extiguishers we just swap them one for one (a big job). Chubb just empty them and re charge them.

In emergencys we can recharge the afff standard and afff 90l our selfs as we carry spare foam.

Of course, there is a nice long paper trail for the mca to look at on inspections to.
