FIRE! - Crash Test Boat video

I'm wondering what you're planning to do next with the crash test boat? Can I suggest that its offered to the PBO forum to see how they can reconstruct it? Perhaps after one last drop test when you lift it as high as possible with a crane and drop it?

A quick Google came up with these. http://www.fireandsafetycentre.co.uk/Products/Fire_Extinguishers/Foam_Fire_Extinguishers/ (No connection or idea on how good they are)

Sent the following to the company and will post their response>

I have a number of dry powder extinguishers on my boat which will require replacement soon. Having lived aboard a large ship for lots of years, and a lot of fire-fighting courses using AFFF, I like the idea of changing to these. However, on the dry powder, I have a guage to show that I have good pressure, and there is a secure stowage allowing the extinguisher to be mounted at whatever angle best suits the location, and will hold the extinguisher despite bad weather. Furthermore, assuming it has not been used(!)how long will the extinguisher last before needing to be replaced?

Just a word of warning, make sure your water extinguishers actually are AFFF.

We used to use a demonstration of what happens with a very hot oil fire that has self ignited if plain water is used as the extinguishing agent.

When the water is poured in, an egg cup full, the water turns imediately to steam expanding at a great rate with the burning oil spread over the surface becoming a burning liquid expanding vapour explosion (BLEVE).

In simple words you would all be leaping overboard as fast as you can.

It used to be a standard demonstration; since it often happend in UK homes on a Friday night before electric deep fat friers became common.

Interesting.
What would happen if a large bucket of water (or two) were thrown onto a galley fire?

Another very interesting test.

Something that struck me as worrisome was having stood too close pushing the burning toast down the back, is that it was was a good job it landed somewhere you could still get at and not hidden down the back of a panel or such.

Anyway, didn't Etap or A.N.Other drive one of their boats into rocks, piers and I think I remember they dropped it from quite a height. Someone posted the video which was on ooohtube. The boat faired remarkably.

Excellent stuff

Brilliant, I never realised that the powder would cause a white out.

At the start of next season I'm getting a couple of Foam extinguishers.

Once again, thanks YM these videos have really helped me clarify what to do should the situation ever arise.

BTW Are you planning to make a DVD of these videos? If so I'm buying.

Great video in a great series. Best way to spend a few grand on a series IMHO; better than "win a boat".

We once had a fire onboard from trying to prime a parrafin stove (first outing on a new to us boat). The fire was sloshing about on the stove top. The result was probably like a small scale chip pan fire.

First I tried the fireblanket and achieved very little - due to the shape of the stove, the pan, and the suroundings, we couldn't get an airtight seal, and the flames just licked around the sides of the blanket- the fire needs to be contained in a pan for this to work, was my conclusion.

Then my mate let rip with the foam, and grinned from ear to ear; a life time's ambition fulfilled. It was one helluva mess to clear up afterwards, though in a much smaller area than dry powder in the video.

Dehler bashed one off a few things, but they didn't drop it. They have a bumper on the keel and a layer of kevlar in the lay up, so I'm not sure all GRP boats would fair as well in the tests they did (or that the Dehler would survive being dropped).

I'll pass that on to everyone in the office.

I can't say what is planned for the series in the future, but keep an eye out in the magazine for details :)
