Apparently there has been a fire at Port Solent on 'F' pontoon. No info at present but boats next to main one damaged. No more news. Suggest bertholders check with PS.

I'm currently sitting on C pontoon at PS, and was just about to leave this morning when I saw the smoke and flames. It was a pretty frightening sight but Port Solent staff were pretty good and brought their workboat in closer to the flames than I'd ever have wanted to be to tow a couple of boats clear.

The boat that caught fire was a large motorboat, fairly unrecognisable now as I'm not a MoBo expert but yes it could easily have been a Sunseeker. Most of the superstructure is gone and it burnt down to deck level, its definitely a write off.

The boat to seaward of it has obvious discolouration of the gelcoat caused by being licked by the flames and its cover has been burnt away in one place. Other boats probably have damage but I think its probably its immediate neighbours and maybe the one on the other side of F pontoon that have taken the damage.

Once the fireengines arrived they got it out quite quickly but it took them what seemed like ages to arrive - we could hear the sierens but I guess they were held up by the morning rush on the M/A27.

At the time I was worried incase someone had been on board but the fire was intense, I ran over initially thinking of trying to go down onto the pontoon and check but by the time I got there I decided that was a pretty crazy plan as I'd never have got close and there could have been gas cylinders etc. No abulances arrived so pretty sure its only damage to property at least.

Having never seen a GRP boat alight before I am still shocked how fast it went up. I'd be really interested to know the cause of the fire if anyone has any info. Scary, hope noone on the forum has suffered damage due to this.

Chris

Yep - really scarey - just lets hope noone was hurt at all, and then secondly all boats damaged are properly insured and yes, thirdly, none of the forumites have boats that have been damaged.

A few details, I was down there just as the fire was put out. The Sunseeker, a 45 ft was totally destroyed. Most boats around it suffered from EXTREME sooting. The Fairline to port, A Phantom 43, was badly damaged and the flybridge looked somewhat singed. Unfortunately this was a fairly new boat by all accounts. To stb there was an older Princess, it looked like a 35, it was badly burnt down the side, probably more so than the other boat.

The sunseeker was obviously a right off. Its the other two boat owners I feel sorry for. they will have there boats repaired but the intensity of the fire must have damaged the interior of these two boats as well. Its like driving a car after a smack and having it repaired, its never quiet the same again.

It makes you wonder about the reasoning behind craminig boats in so close. I caravanned for a few years and we were not allowed to set up any closer than 25ft on most sites. Space is money I suppose. I'll stay were I am in a nice cosy not so densely packed marina, just in case.

The only saving grace is that nobody was injured and no gas cylinders went up. Lets face it that even the most expensive boat down there is ultimately on its way to the scrap heap anyway!!
