Is there a better solution than using small chocolate block type connectors for the very small wires as used for NMEA0183 multicore cable?

Ideal thing is in line sub miniature jacks, they maintain the shield and are easily demountable, Icom actually provide them on the in / out their higher end VHFs for 0183 interfacing.

Thanks all for info. The solder/shrink is probably the correct way to do it, but I shall look at the other options.

Almost anything is better than a choc block, they are totally unsuitable for a boat. For a permanent connection, do as Elton says. Otherwise some form of plug and socket, but I wouldn't use jacks, some can short out when unplugged. I use "Mini Uni Lok" which come in a variety of terminals:

Means you can use one wire per terminal and create multiple connections by fitting links to the hole in the circuit. Not sure if available in UK. I got mine shipped to a friend in the US who posted to me. 15way version also available

Soldering is not a good idea, particularly on such fine conductors unless you can provide immediate strain relief and ensure they are free from movement, it is then not a bad idea. Would you use single strand conductors, that's what an in line solder joint is. Jacks are one of the ways recommended for 0183 I recall reading about it in my NMEA technicians journal a while back and have used them ever since, shorting during disconnect or connect is an irrelevance in the unlikely event it happens as the kit would not be on and even if it was the only short that could occur would be split second and do no harm on 0183 transmit circuits. Almost anything will work, from just twisting the conductors together and taping them to well made demountable male and females, it's a case of for how long the job will last and the ease of disassembly for future work and additions.

I've used these when I rewired, amazing things, especially the multiway versions, which allow you to gang together connections, they happily hold different gauges of wire in one block, and the little flick lever makes changing things very quick and simple. No more fiddling with a screwdriver while holding the cable.

You should be able to pick them up in most electrical wholesalers.

I've epoxyed them to a piece of board fixed to a bulkhead, made a neat installation.

I made this distributor for nmea, It is fed from one GPS. Radar, DSC, comp, are plugged in the front. I can also use the extra lead to plug another GPS into the front, male or female jack seen on the right. All available from Rapid electronics (audio) for pennies.

I'm rather surprised that these connectors work in the marine environment. I use Anchor brand crimp connectors with heat-shrink that has a glue inside that seals the joint. At a push I will use spade terminals and spray them with a Canadian product called Corrosion Block .... in a spray can : http://learchem.com/products/corrosion-block.html
