I have a yanmar 1gm but the alternator was changed a few years ago and maybe this is why the standard v belts don't seem to fit....it is hard to get tension sufficient on the belt even with the adjusting bolt right at the max. The existing belt is a Mitsuboshi remf 1305 and what I need is something exactly the same but about 2inches less in length....trawling the net reveals scant specifications for other belts only lengths which is hopeless without other specs...belt is about 10mm wide with no grooves...any ideas where to source one? Are there shops of some kind where one can talk to a human and give them the existing belt and get one a size down?

My suggestion is that you loosen off the adjuster and swing the alternator in close to the engine , wrap a piece of light line around the pulleys and mark off the minimum length of belt required, then bring your existing belt, along with the piece of string, to a motor factors where they will find you something to suit. When you are satisfied that your purchase fits the bill, go back and get two or three more, as spares, that's what I did.

Real people to visit and talk to.

Erik's (previously Fenners) specialise in belts. Look on their site and if you are near one of their locations take the old belt for them to sort the shorter equivalent. Very helpful here in Ipswich. http://www.eriks.co.uk/Contact-us/
