Finding a new insurance company

Following my recent thread, the insurers have decided notwithstanding that TG is ok, they are adopting a new policy from 1st January not to insure craft over 50 years old.

Any recommendations please?

It's hard to fault Pants on anything except price - but it is quite easy to fault them quite a lot on price!

I insure with Simon Winter, whom I find to be friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating of the minor vagaries of classic boat ownership (www.simonwintermarine.co.uk/).

I've talked to Simon and he sounded good. Currrently with Yachtmaster in Woodbridge. My boat was built 1952

GJW most certainly do cover wood. I've been with them from when they took over Pole Star.

Thanks. I was aware of Simon Winter and t'was a quite a few years ago GJW at the Boat Show that 'didn't insure wood' by the remarkably pretty sales 'lady'. But I will enquire.

A neighbour insured with 'Y' made a claim earlier this year. Circa £10k. Everything went very smoothly. He found Y very good in all respects when handling the claim.
About 5 years ago another neighbour made a significant claim with Pantaenius Insurance. Circa £35k. He was delighted with how they handled the claim and still estows their vertues.

I have just had a break in and theft claim that was dealt with very quickly and in exemplary fashion by Navigators and General. It does sort of restores ones faith in things when this happens rather than being let down by companies!

I was with GJW for several years, with no issues. However, when my wooden cutter turned 50 about 9 years ago, they would no longer insure me for more than UK inland / coastal waters up to only 3 miles offshore. Similar response from Navigators and General.

Have had good service from Simon Winter since then (cruising area UK waters and Europe, Brest to Elbe), and also heard positive reports of Yachtmaster from others with similar vessels .

'preciate the comments re Winters. Suspected GJW would not be interested. Will be some interesting responses this week. No rush for two months before the existing policy runs out.

I have a policy with CETA for my snapdragon, and one via SAGA for my Guy Thompson....SAGA, They specialise in over 50's don't they???

That's very interesting. 'Sniper' is 50 years old next year so I await the next renewal with some trepidation. A good incentive to get a North sea crossing in beforehand. Good to know there are other brokers who will cover well-found older wooden boats.
