Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Well, as some of you already knew, especially the Wokingham group. There was a new 'Rat Boat' in the pipeline. Finally decided with some help from some friends, both on here and at Sparkes and agreed a deal over Xmas.

The new (to me) one is a Fairline Targa 40. As Jez let on last week, she is called 'Houston' as in 'Mission Control'. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You know, one of these...

There were a few things to be installed, like Genny and Eberspacher before collection but she was ready for last weekend but we were held up by the poor weather.

Eager to get her back, we were looking for a break in the weather to get down to Weymouth on 'Panache' and return in 'Houston'. Monday night, it blew F8 through Sparkes Marina until after midnight with the promise of a high ridge arriving for the morning. Surprisingly, it did and we set off at 9:00 am on Tuesday in company with Simon and Tracey who also have a Targa 40 called 'TYKO' and played a pretty strong part in our final decision to get one.

We set off in light airs from the North wondering if Christchurch Bay and St Albans head would be rough and messy from the winds that had been blowing for over a week. The Solent was flat as flat could be and the bay was quite good too, the overfalls of the the head were naff and we by-passed them about 6 miles out. The cute bit was making good time from St. Albans head and arriving for the 12 noon bridge at Weymouth.

After some formalities, we transferred our personal bits, spent the night in Weymouth and woke upto F5 S Westerly with rain and poor Vis. Still well left at 10:00 am this morning and made it back to Sparkes at around 13:15 hrs, taking it fairly gently at 22knots ish, lovely rolling sea across the bay and loads of spray, sorry no pics, I was too busy holding on and looking for wood! Didn't see any but there was loads of thick kelpy weed in the Needles channel and up towards Yarmouth.

When we got back to Sparkes, it was blowing F5 Westerly at high water, which makes it the toughest for me to get back in my berth...

Guess what? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I found out that I can't drive outdrives again, especially in a confined space and by taking it too carefully, got blown onto the lee shore, in this case the long wall about 25' from my berth! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Which is where I left her, no doubt I'll get more ribbing for that as well. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway - she's a great boat with a performance to match, courtesy of D6 - 350s' and we're looking forward to as many happy miles in her as 'Panache'. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

A mighty fine boat Sir - congratulations.

So how long did it take to transfer the personal items. Isn't it amazing the amout of stuff that builds up over time.

Your berthing problem reminds me of berthing Nauticals 39 in Malahide last year. I had forgotton how to use outdrives so quickly /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It won't be long before you get the knack - I keep hearing "steer then gear".

OH, glad you made it through the wood - so the "what now skipper" thread is not about you then /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Well the make's the same, but vey different to the Phantom.

Took about 4 hours to swap things over, couldn't believe how much stuff there was! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

'Steer then Gear' is fine but 2 knots forward and 5 knots sideways is a trifle disquieting in an unfamiliar boat that you don't want to bend! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Tell me about it. First time out on SV2 I got caught out by the F5 wind on my STBD side in Howth Marina and promptly ran aground /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Lovely looking boat; bet you're pleased as punch /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Better to leave Houston in the wrong place than bashed.

So you'll be an expert the next time we have a fly vs sport debate hereabouts.....

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Congratulations Roger
Shame you haven't got an upstairs though.
But she looks great - your style - you weren't old enough for a Flybridge anyway!!!

I can - it took us about 6 trips to clear JennyWren in the summer.

We're off to see the new JennyWren tomorrow - I'm counting the days now to when we wont be boatless again.

Great stuff, congratulations. Remember, a good berthing is one where no-one and nothing gets damaged, so on that basis, well done.

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Looks great. Although no longer a sports cruiser owner I think Targas (not Botnia - although I do like them too) are super lookers.

What influenced you to change from a flybridge?

Yep, you're right. Not time for pipe and slippers yet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can imagine you must be getting pretty excited yourself now. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think I can contribute to the Flybridge versus Sports threads but not so sure about the Shafts versus Outdrives one.

Even though I walked away from this one it was more by luck than judgement. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I thought someone might ask that... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mostly... Jane, my wife. Her view is, 'More feeling' of boating, speed, the waves and also one level cockpit.

Me, I like them both, but they are quite different and everyone selects for their own personal preferences in the game of boating compromise. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Congratulations Roger, fine choice and lovely balance of handling and performance from those sweet D6's.

Don't worry about the o/d handling a few weeks at the helm and you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Happy boating /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Fantastic Roger, she looks fabulous.
Hope you have many great times on her, really..... cause we all want to read about it, and especially see the pics./forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All the best,

Al.

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Congratulations Roger,

She looks great! Hope to see you some time as we pass Sparks.

I notice Panache in the background, I expect you will miss her.

Happy cruising

D

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

Thanks Trevor,

Not so sure about a few weeks. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If you saw the hole I have to get into, it would make you wonder too. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Those D6's certainly have some grunt and that was one of the reasons why I tried to bring her in too gently!

Alistair, I wouldn't post without a picture, coz you'd be the first to complain. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Finally- Brought New \'Rat Boat\' back today.

MOST Impressive, and a neat tale of the pickup trip and return.

Many many happy sea miles together !
