SWMBO and I went down to the good ship Ballena today and I was astonished at the state of her leg(Ballena not SWMBO). No w I am sure that this question has been asked many times before, but....

Is there a product on the market that I can spray onto the sterndrive to stop all the growth?

I want something that is quick drying so that I can do it between tides on local sandbank. (spray the leg that is)

HELP

After a lot of research I decided to use Waterline by Blakes, in fact second coat went on this morning, seems to dry fast, touch dry 30 minutes, recoat time is 9hrs.
Not sure how effiecient it is though. The cost of some of them is frightening.....

the real problem is getting all the doo doo off the legs first.Pressure wash followed by much pokey with assorted pokers/scrapers while lying on back to get at all your little hidden crevices.Do not scape to much in order not to expose ANY alloy.
Next coat with expensive tar like paint and allow to dry. Then overcoat with even more expensive matt white stuff and allow to dry as it ses on the tin.
You may not prefer to do this while lying in an inch or two of gooey mud with stuff falling in your eyes..........etc........... etc..........
Ps you do not have to have matt white /forums/images/icons/laugh.gifchoice of colours available.

Perhaps the best way to keep the leg clean is through use /forums/images/icons/wink.gif . In the same way that you antifoul the hull, you should do the same to the leg, but not with the same antifoul as for the hull. Use something like International Trilux or one of the new Teflon based spray products which are formulated for stern drives.

new leg = spray on or International Veridian(?) (teflon)
old leg = clean as you can then 2 coats Trilux
both need a minimum of 24 hours to get the coats on and before you can stick back in water

Re: Thanks for all your advice

Suppose you could clean on sand bank. Then clean again next day on sandbank, then paint, then clean, then paint again. Might not be just as efficient. But should work. You will need to spend alot of time with the leg on the sandbank Hope SWMBO understands!!

I clean mine in sandbanks! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Very effective, almost no paint left on skeg or prop, and metal nicely shiny. Need to find a nice soft bank to regularly ground on so I can remove the paint further up the leg though

There's a fine balance...depends if you think you're overpropped. Over enthusiastic dredging of the Bembridge channel for instance can reduce a prop in size quite dramatically..http://www.ppc.org.uk/forum/index.php?a=topic&forum=18&topic=2

Re: Thanks for all your advice

Props and skeg can take quite a lot of punishment before you have any problems. If you're not getting serious vibration (unbalanced prop?) I'd leave it until next time you lift it out.

Sounds like you were easing out gently, so unlikely to have done serious damage.

If you hit something at speed, then is the time to lift out and look.

My prop's got quite a few dings on the edges, but it hasn't affected performance

I have just had my leg done with a clear anti-foul spray that comes in a spray can, it takes 15mins to dry before you put on the second coat. I got mine from Pirates Cave Chandlery in Chatham, it cost about £20. If you need to know more give them a ring, unfortunately the rest of my can is on the boat and I can't give you the name at the moment.

Cheers.
