FILM: \"A Night to Remember\"

For reasons that I will not go into, I was, earlier on, watching Kenneth More make every humanly possible effort to save life as the Titanic went down.

Things were fine for a while - 'Euhh my dear, eh wouldn't wish to be seen dead in such a horrible little lifeboat' etc etc, until they let the riffraff in steerage out of their cage.

After that, order and discipline broke down as the proles with their Cockney/Welsh/Irish/Scottish accents scrambled for their lives.

But wasn't there a villainous aristo who tried to sneak on to a lifeboat dressed as a woman? Poor show - not quite the straight bat.

However, the reason for the chaos was actually that the Captain had not performed a risk assessment and, in particular had failed to perform a COSHH assessment on the iceberg, which was plainly a Substance Hazardous to Health. Not sure if anyone tried to bring a corporate manslaughter charge against the White Star Line? History doesn't seem to relate and, so far as I know, James Cameron has not yet started filming "Sue the Titanic"

PS: not intending to demean the memory of the many brave people on the Titanic, including Lt Lightoller (sp?) the man portrayed by Kenneth Moore, who was a courageous and decent man, and owned a very fine motorboat, to boot /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Edit: And here she is......

Quite ironic that at the end of the film, the caption says that as a result of the titanic life is now safer at sea because all vessels maintain an active 24 hour radio watch! So that's all right then.
