Filling shakes in mast - advice please

I'm removing my wooden mast at Easter to strip it and re treat. Not revarnishing but probably using something like Colron.
There are some shakes in it (i.e. small splits) running with the grain.
Can anybody suggest a suitable filler to seal them up?

This is an "old faithful" sort of question and the answer is -

- with a varnish finish - any mastic that will not set hard. Ordinary cheap builders' mastic, like Arboseal, is as good as any. All you are aiming to do is to keep water out of the crack, which may well close up again somewhat anyway.

- with Coelan you may need to be a bit more careful - they sell a special filler to go with their product. I've not used it and I fancy that any soft polyurethane will do, but quite possibly builders mastic will do also so long as it has skinned over by the time you put the first coat on.

i always use bee's wax and for finer shakes i use raw linseed oil, it ''gells'' up in cracks. good for leaky decks too,can be thinned down with turps if required.
